Recruit

As far as I found, this was only touched upon here- sorta: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,4328.0.html
It seems AIs with a melee weapon try to close to 1 inch away from whomever they're attacking.
As a result of that, they're too far inside their weapon's optimum range and are hitting their target mid-swing, dealing reduced damage in most cases.
To be fair, sometimes units do back away- but more often they simply pile onto targets and things happen as described above.
Shouldn't a pikeman with a weapon reach of X try to stay X distance away from the enemy?
Additional: It'd be cool if troops could change to a shorter-reach weapon if they have one.
Someone gets past the pikeman's optimum poking distance and he switches over to a dagger (or whatever), for example.
