So important a said it thrice!

Some new formations (as seen in various mods) and better path finding are key i think...

In particular I would point out that infantey's standard line formation makes them weak. Infantry's strength lies in its ability to soak cavalry charges, which it cannot do when the line is only one man thick.

Better than when they're scattered, though, in my experience.

I would love double lines of infantry.  Perhaps the standard formation is inf_pop/2 wide, with a command to make it form more lines at the cost of front.

Try F8 (I think) get's your guys to stand closer together

Historicly you need 4 lines (or more)
In game would 4 lines work better then 2, yes.

Would two lines work better then 1? yes.
Would 2 lines stop the majorety of calvary chareges in game?

It probably depends upon what level you have the AI set to and your troop level.

My army of Hired blades, with a Maxed out AI combat do a very lovely swirl through infanty. I doubt two lines of infantry would stop them. Though one line of even crappy calvary does, for they all lump up on the calvary. Of course I can not complain, for this kills the enemy calvary very effectivly.

In the end, in game, vs high level calvary with hi level AI I think you would require four lines of infantry to stop all the calvary in a  charge.
3 would stop most

2 Would stop plenty to be killed.

Formations have already been handled by modders.

See liberty or death.

Highlander also released code to make it work a while ago...

Well considering I can soak a decent charge with only ONE line, it would probably help.

I forgot the native cavalry has an awful charge. Cavalry should be able to smash through our double line formation in native (something I forgot to point out that we do have).

They haven't been "handled", they have been experimented with to a certain extent. They also don't provide a flexible platform that an enhanced native system would as the modded formations are static, while native controls allow for adjusting the spacing of the troops, which also adjusting how many ranks (currently a max of two).

Troop Formations!

Sorry, but we don't need a number of topics on the same subject ::smile: As much as I'd agree that we need more formations, (and an improved AI, since currently the cavalry charge is stopped by one line because the cavalry AI themselves decides to stop - instead of charge, hence not really being a cavalry 'charge' but rather infantry on 4 legs), I would advise you to please discuss in the linked thread.
