As far as I know you can't. You have to disband their party and get them back into your party.
It would be nice if you could just talk to them "let me see your gear" like in Warband. Unfortunately it does not work that way.

Exactly..don't really wanna disband the party ..and I'm guessing they don't upgrade their own gear either
