Yilkes it was only a suggestion... if you don't post on this thread then it won't clog up the forum anymore
I'm sure the mods are quite capable of policing the forums and deleting threads that they believe to be of little or no importance...
As stated it was only an idea I had - there is a lot of stuff in native that isn't being used presently eg gun powder weapons, undead, several quests and more
Obviously practical uses would probably be limited to mods... but is still and interesting concept. The chance of it actually getting implemented is marginal but an idea is an idea...
I'm not strongly minded about the topic, it was a whimsical fancy at best - but thanks to your comments I'll now treat the idea with a bit more seriousness, Plato's Cave and all that

...
This idea would aim to add another dimension to the game, increasing tactical variance, giving new options for players and generating a brand spanking new game dynamic...
Theoretically to get a "flying unit" wouldn't be to hard - but difficulties would include manageing wind resistance, flight speed and gravity (to get the feeling of quickly swooping in and then fighting to gain altitude) and obviously the vertical height and width of the scene. This equates to turning a simple "flying agent" into a troop type that appears to be restrained by physics and hence must act and behave realistically. On top of this is the problem of getting the AI to know what to do - i think presently if they can't path find to their targets and have no ranged weapons then they stand still, i am unsure how melee units would react to an agent attacking them from an area that again they can't path find too. AI aerial units are obviously going to need some altered form of the current mounted AI.
As far as balancing goes it is safe to say that these units will probably only be checked by other flying units. Perhaps very week armour and health and a slow movement speed would address the balance, allowing missile troops to pick them out of the air effectively. Pikes and spears would find the same use here as they do against cavalry.
Other then that most player actions would remain the same with lances bows and swords (seating positions would have to accommodate for arm room etc)... but perhaps you might need to tilt your swoop on decent a little to get a clean strike...
Again the chance of it actually getting implemented into native is extremelly unlikely, but is real world results always the purpose of sharing ideas?
Now feel free to flame as much as you like... there is a certain amount of irony in perpetuating a topic that you hate so much
