Advantages vs Disadvantages of Picking a Side

The title says it all. What are the advantages and disadvantages in practical terms of selecting one side over another? I know the Duke or Counts will give you quests, but what else? If I join one side can I still visit towns from the other side; buy and sell there? Will I be automatically attacked etc by scouts or soldiers from the other side? Other than some quests, why shouldn't I stay neutral?

Well, you can get quests if you join a side, those are decent ways to make money. You also get a (small) weekly paycheck. If your reputation gets low enough with the other faction they'll start going after you.

If you declare allegiance to either faction, you can still buy and sell in towns of the other faction. I don't think there's even a penalty, though I could be wrong.

You have a reputation score with every faction in the game: Vaegir, Swadian, river pirates, mountain bandits, Kerghits, Dark Hunters, etc. The lower the score, the likelier members of that faction will attack you on sight.

My main character is around -38 to Swadians right now, and he can count on being attacked by Swadian war parties whenever he crosses paths with them. Swadian foragers usually run from him, and caravans still mostly ignore him.

Interestingly, in the newer versions of M&B one can bribe certain factions for a temporary improvement in one's reputation. Paying off a group of mountain bandits, for example, will raise one's rep from -30 to -1 with all mountain bandits for a day or so.

Declaring allegiance to Vaegir or Swadia allows you to get quests from the lords, and more importantly allows you to prey on the other faction. Attacking caravans, foragers and war parties gives much better experience and loot than attacking the same old pirates and bandits.

yes. swadian crossbows are very hard to fight. even with mega armor and a fast horse, fighting 10 of them becomes a huge problem

OMFG NECRO!!1

Anyway, join the Swadians. They own.

Swadians are the easier side to play as (more territory, better upper-class units, etc.).  When you're ready to -really- play well, start a Vaegir character.  :D

Barton is the one that decided to necro this thread, but notice that he added (somewhat) to the thread with his post?  Gooood Barton, good.  Much better than the standard "I don't think so" type of necro post.  :D

one disadvantage of joining with vaegirs is that you have to fight swadian crossbowmen more often.  ouch

The primary benefit of joining a side is that you'll have a wealth of people to kill.  For the neutral character, if you're effecient enough at killing stuff, it can be hard to find worth opponents that are worth the hassle.  You can only slaughter so many Mountain Bandits before it starts to wear a little thin.  But if you join a side, suddenly you've got all kinds of War Parties and Patrols to hunt :D  More loot, more XP.

I rarely do the quests. But I always join the Vaegirs because they're closer to Zendar.. :D
On a note: I enjoy fighting agaist Swadian crossbow men.

Actually, if you attack caravans you can piss off the owning faction. It's possible to stay neutral and be at war with pretty much everyone but the peasants.

Is the only place to rest in Zendar then?  How does this affect troop morale?  Are merchant quests still available when sneaking into an enemy town?
