SP Tutorial Module System Adding new items to m&b using Wings 3d (now with pictures!)

It is a file type.

Whenever you see .abc or .bla or .123 it is a file type. If you don't know what a file type is, you're not ready to mod. Try to pick up some basic familiarity with using a computer first - directories, files, folders, extensions, that kind of stuff.

Also, MoeJoe, please don't spam your questions in unrelated threads. You're not making any friends that way.

Thanks, but is this an unrelated thread? I am just trying to learn a few things. I knew it was a file type, but what more is it?

This is an ok thread to post in. The unrelated thread was the Star Wars thread. When you've got a proper model you want to contribute to the mod, you can post it there. Until then, general vague questions about modelling should not go there.

"What more is it" is covered in Yoshi's tutorial. Read it. Try it.

EDIT: To clarify, specific questions about a model that is for the Starwars mod can go in the thread, For example, "What is the barrel length of a gammorean gungan-blaster?" Or "I can't get Yoda's ears quite right, can anyone help me?"

General questions like "what is a BRF?" should go in the more general mod-helper threads.

Yes, fisheye is right. You can do a little background research yourself you know, there is hundreds and hundreds on texts about modding in this forum, its quite silly to expect all the information on modding (which is a massively wide subject) to be explained to you when you ask or in a single post.

And i try to explain what BRF files are in the tutorial, read it through. BRF files can be all kinds of things. Basically they are binary code files. More specifically, in M&B they are used to store models, collision meshes, materials, texture referances, shaders, skeletons etc etc. It is quite a long list.

Thanks. I have read a lot here, but I ask when I don't understand something (which is quite often).

when I try to start the game after I am finished, I gets a erreor:  get_object failed for: my_new_weapon_textures.
I have search but I cant find somthing to help me

somewhere you are referancing to something called "my_new_weapon_textures" which isnt there. Check your texture BRF is loaded in module_info.txt

Makes it all worth it

alright, I've got a strange problem. some items I've made and then applied a texture to them, and saved. now, when I open them again, the texture isn't applied, though the texture still appears in the outliner window. this is also giving me the same error in BRFEdit as when the object hasn't been UV mapped, but it obviously has, or there wouldn't be a texture applied to it, right? this has only happened recently, hadn't heppened to me until about a week ago.

here's a pic of the outliner, in case you can tell what's wrong from that:

when you assign an object the "default" material in wings3d along with a texture and save then re-load wings creates a new material called "default2". Your weapon will be assigned this material. I can't quite remember but i think your texture will be applied to none of the materials. (although it could still be applied to default). So, take a look in my sig for the unwrapping tut. Materials and stuff should be covered there.

Needless to say, that shouldnt really matter at all, because M&B uses completely seperate materials. TO make sure the whole model is unwrapped go select > by > uvmapped faces

then press ctrl shift and I to invert the selection. Press A and it will center the view on any non-unwrapped faces, if all your faces are unwrapped it will center the view on the center of the viewpoint.

thanks man, you're a Godsend  somehow or another there were 2 faces that weren't yet unwrapped (although I selected the entire object and did the UV mapping) but yeah, thanks again

I UV mapped my mace seen owning Instag0 in his thread, and I tried to rescale it and exported it, and when I tried to import it with Thor's editor it said that the mesh "does not have texture coordinates" or some such nonsense.

make sure you have it all mapped, you might have missed a face like octoburn did. Try the technique i told him.
