When city sieges are fought, there should be fighting through out the city. Not just the city gate area. I suggest adding in phases to make sieges worth while.
There should be a certain amount of phases depending on the type of city player/enemy is sieging.

Phase 1:
- Breach the wall and city gates and wipe out any defenders until they're all dead or they retreat. (retreated troops can reinforce phase 2 battle)

Phase 2:
- The invaders has to capture key positions in the town through out the city or wipe out all the defenders until they're all dead or they retreat. (retreated troops can reinforce phase 3 battle)

Phase 3:
- The invaders has to breach the Castle walls and gates and kill any defenders until they're all dead or they retreat. (Retreated troops can reinforce phase 4 battle)

Phase 4 final battle:
- The invaders has to start from first floor and work their way up to the castle roof and capture the flag or kill everybody. If the flag is captured, the battle ends and the remaining defending troops surrenders.

Phase 1, you can have as many people on the field. Phase 2 - 4, only a certain amount is allowed. Dead troops are replaced by reinforcements. 1 Dies and another replace them from the army pool for that particular phase. The defenders can set up how many troops they want in each phase including army pool for each phase. For example; Phase 2 is capped at 300 per team on the field. Defender placed 1000 troops in phase 2 army pool. 300 on the field and 700 in reinforcements.
The attacker doesn't split troops up in phases, because they're the attackers. Phase 4 probably will be capped at 40 per team since its inside the castle.

They certainly have planned this but not to this extent. What they've said is that you'll be fighting past the walls, through the retreating and secondary defenses (Those archer wooden wall hole things, bastions), then into the keep. I would like to see variations on this plan but all in all it's a pretty good plan.

A major and painstakingly large change, would be the ability for both AI and players to strategically place their defenses around. For example, the player wants to defend a large fortified tower so that 15 elite archers can fire upon both the oncoming attackers and ones that have gone beyond the wall. The player could select a small group of men 5-6 for each doorway, and command them to shieldwall the tower. That tower alone could last through most of the siege, and provide a very strong defense for a side of the wall.

Conversely if I'm attacking and I have an archer heavy army, I would like to be able take enemy towers/parts of the wall and use them for to my advantage as the siege progresses.

Allowing the player and AI to strategize during sieges would be a ground breaking achievement but for right now, getting "full" sieges would be great to.

One thing I'd like to see would be an ability to sorty out and hit the Siege tower or Ram before an official assualt has happened with a night attack where you with say ten picked men then face maybe 25 men, but with that number divided into little watch posts that you attack, and also you have only four minutes to kill them all before the rest of the camp wakes up and you if completed can burn the ram. if not suddenly you have 100 guys after you and you must fleet to the gate. Or risk capture.

One fun thing as an attacker whould be also to optionnaly play the siege engine round, when you have a trebuchet or whatever ready you opt in to load the siege scene with little troops, like 10, per engine and play with it trying to clear the ennemy walls and/or damage them, or just destroy enemy machines.
The same as a defender with a couple archers and machine servants on the attacker side.

Those mini battles would help test ennemy strength, adjust the final assault strategy (maybe position the ladders in such siege skirmirshes...?)

Those would also affect armies morale and help in the final battle as well, depending on the trend(lower morale troops will retreat easier).

Those may even lead to such a drop of moral that the attacker disbands or that the besieged settlement surrenders.
