Act of War

I wonder if anyone here has played Act of War: Direct Action and its expansion High Treason? IMO it has be the best RTS in a modern/near-future setting out there, and I don't think the Wikipedia article does it much justice, since the PoW system, ambushing infantry, and soldiers that are slowed and eventually taken out of action by injuries all qualify as innovative gameplay.

What, sticking the game in a semi modern setting suddenly makes generic and overused features 'innovative'?

Okay, what about in any setting? I can't remember any other even vaguely comparable RTS that rewarded me for taking the enemy in alive (outside of heavily scripted campaign missions). Or where injured troops limped along complaining about their severed artery.

Injured / damaged units moving slower / having reduced abilities has been around since Dune 2. Capturing enemies is possible in the entire Close Combat series, This Means War! and a few others (as were destructible buildings and spontaneous barricade production).

Okay, then. What about the ambushing? I know some games where units stealth in specific terrain, but in AoW the ambushes are just awesome. Something to do with the double damage and guaranteed group fire.

Beyond various units having an ambush ability attack?

Off the top of my head,  Kohan (massive combat bonuses), Sudden Strike (no specific bonus, beyond annihilation of the enemy), Close Combat (morale effects)and War Wind (damage bonusesall allowed ambushing in one form or another.

Kohan (the first one) is the ****, if you haven't played it, do it.

Kohan had entrenchment, not ambush, in Sudden Strike "ambush" means seeing the enemy first, but you can't have your men actually hide and prepare an ambush. Haven't played War Wind and to little Close Combat to remember.

Entrenchment isn't the same as ambush. Entrenching happens if your squads stand still. Ambush occurs if you attack the enemy from cover (i.e. a forest, mountainside or in certain circumstances, high ground). Entrenchment provides massive defensive bonuses, Ambush halves enemy squad morale for the duration of the battle.

Really? I never noticed the enemy morale getting halved, I thought you just had the terrain bonii :???:

Anyway, enough Kohan (although it is indeed awesome also). AoW is the order of the day, although I take it hasn't much of a following around here?

Warwind was a cute game with RPG elements and cool items.

Even so, Act of War was tasty at least, and I loved the physics engines and urban combat.

Never played it. Didn't catch my eye, either.

By the way:

Arch, I love a good strategy game as much as the next man, but in all honesty, to you get a hard-on if you hear the letters 'R', 'T', and 'S' in a sentence?

Heck, even just a wiggle?

'Cause I'll be damned if you seem to haven't played one recent to within the past... fifteen years. Heck I hadn't of Close Combat since I played the original, something like ten, eleven-ish years ago...

There are still good RTS's. I rather like the genre. However I think the Total War series is the future.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???????????????????????????????

Do you know what? The best RTS is: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR!!!
