About Night Battles

I don't know (can't discern) if night battles had any other penalty than that you barely can see your enemies. I mean, the AI had a penalt in night battles?
What I want to suggest is that you could buy torches to use at night. It will add a nice effect at night battles, I think. If there is a penalty, those who are using torches won't get it. However, they couldnt use shields, either.

Sounds like some D&D rules there, it would be quite stupid to have to use a torch anyway, mostly because its bright enough to see in M&B and having to hold a torch when fighting is suicide. I dont think its a good idea to have stuff like kids have when they play with eachother:

"Letspretend this guy is weak because he has a torch"
"Yea, and my guy cant see but he is strong"

I hope you see what i mean, it might be a good idea in more hardcore RPG's but not in M&B where realism is IMO quite important

Oh, its bright enough to see? So its my crap and old monitor that made me think it's too dark, because i cant see anything (and the bright is at max). But, if realism is so important to you, try to fight with someone at night, only under the stars light, and say me if you wont have any difficult in hit him.

Yea youre right, but which one would carry the torch, you or the opponent? If its you then you are the one serving the light and the one that gets whipped, same goes the other way around. Hmm, any history experts around who knows anything about fighting in the dark, who carried light when fighting, the unit leader or a specific soldier for it or was there none? But on the other hand pitch black nights are very rare, your eyes eventually get used to the lighting.

Torchbearers were not common mainly because in night battles the idea was to remain unseen. The main battles at night however were attacks on camps and therefore watchfires and braziers lit the fighting ground. If the battle was fought on open ground there were often torches that were soon dropped after lighting fires on the battlefield. and torches can operate as quite an effective weapon. some armies would use siege weapons to shoot rags soaked in flames to wreak havoc in enemy lines, lighting up the enemy BUT NOT THEMSELVES. Makes sense cos then you can pick them of with archers. who said an enemy was a great source of light? I hear hair burns great!

The moon is always out in M&B night battles... it gives plenty of lighting, and its reflections on the units' armor looks pretty cool, I think. :)

Now being able to burn down the peaent's hovel with them inside on the other hand would help for those who get bored while playing for too long!

Toting a torch around when the enemy has archers isn't probably a great idea.

Precisely...torches really don't let you see that far, and they make you a perfect target for enemy archers/crossbowmen.

People used torches for things other than a battle Scamp. Signals, seeing inside at night, distracting enemy troops, etc.

That's what I meant, but everytime they go out ot search for the hero who has just escaped the castle they always have torchas, lots of torchas, and lots of yelling.

That's interesting, you learn something new everyday, no matter how pointless it is. But I still don't think you will be needing to find any heroes.

I think it would be a nice effect to have torches in the battlefield...add to atmosphere, if one was too close to a tree or bush it would be funny if it went up in flames and people/horses run into it and catch alight them selves...hehe

dont discourage ideas, discourage discouraging ideas. Mount and Blade started off as an idea, and the good ones prevail.
