I must notice that a mounted soldier has no any advantage when confronting a foot soldier.
I was always forced to dismount in order to successfully join melee combat, because when mounted it seems that a soldier is more vulnerable and can't use the sword effectively.
This is something that I really don't like, because it is known that a mounted soldier has serious advantage against a foot warrior. Swinging a sword when mounted always presents grave danger for the foot warrior because his head is exposed to blows from the warrior which has advantage in height, and hence can deliver much power to each blow concentrating on opponents head. Therefore, a foot warrior must raise the shield to protect. On contrary, only mounted warrior's legs are directy exposed to blows.
I experienced so much time a disasterous results when engaing one or to enemy soldiers using a horse a shield and a sword. It is pretty ineffective to deliver sword blows from the horse. So the foot soldier has an advantage in Mount&Blade game.
And when fighting in arena, I know that mounted knights whether they have a lance or a sword, they'll be an easy target (taking into account that you are footman, and that a knight using a lance is controlled by computer).
And this is really not logical, and is contrary to historical facts.
Though, when mounted and charging with a lance then there is a kind of advantage for the mounted warrior, and I applaud to that.

What about your opinions, experiences?

My thoughts on this? Don't make conclusions when you have played only for 5 minutes. Don't go *****ing about something that isn't even true. Footsoldiers don't have a change against mounted, heavily armoured knights in this game, unless the footsoldiers manage to surround the knight in a thight spot.

Even though I have a firm grasp of mounted strikes I will say this, my mounted companions, AI controlled, do not have a firm grasp of this. I see so many charge an enemy clump of footmen and, if thier horse does not have a high charge rate, watch them stall and get cut down over and over.

Milver, try timing your swing with when the get clipped by your horse - no guard. It gets easy, mounted combat is much easier as you can get the hell out of dodge. Lancing and a fast horse actually seems to be the way to go as the AI doesn't seem to block a couched lance much.

On the downside, even with the longest lance around, I can still lance and get lanced at the same time - that's annoying. Especially when fighting a 160 odd Swadian War Party and the automatic result gives baaad casualties.

Nakhuri are these guys on your logo from the band Immortal? If not, who are they?

[derail]it has Abbath from Immortal and Fenriz of Darkthrone.
I don't know what I was thinking when I made this thing my avatar. It's not even funny.

There is much debate as to how to make footsoldiers stronger at the moment. The current idea is to give them a sort of dodge/roll capability to evade cavalry.

If you think you can just plow into footmen with impunity, then you will be sorely disappointed, but if you clip your enemies or strike stagglers then you can crush even the strongest Sea Raider parties alone (and hope they miss you with all those ranged weapons)

In the early game mounted combat is hard against foot soldiers but once you get some experience and a good horse you can own just about anything.

See that is what I like... As an inexperienced warrior you can't just take up the mantle of knight or horse archer, you have to learn and become an experienced warrior.

But unfortunately it is best when you playthe first time. You need to learn how to handle everything like a real fighter. Now I can become a knight if I get the equipment (not minding the requirements in Riding), but even still it is very much a gradual step.
