Chapter 14: A sudden change of plans
October 4. 1257
This day has been a bad day for the Vaegir Kingdom. We lost Dhirim to the Nords, and right after that, they declare peace on us. Then, the Khergit Khanate declares war on us. I hope we will do better against the Khergits. My wound, however, has gotten better, and I can walk properly now.

Lately, there have been only a few skirmishes here and there in the war, but right now they are besieging Reyvadin, with an army of almost thousand men! Boyar Meriga is the marshal, and he is a damn good one too, as he was a marshal once in 1255, and I followed my knight to battle under the command of Meriga, we took Wercheg but lost it a few weeks later, I still remember it. We are following him now, with an army of 800 men, but even if we are outnumbered by the Khergits, we have a lot of knights, that may just be the essential thing in the coming fights.
We get to Reyvadin, and we start to form our cavalry line. We charge the enemy, and the coming fight is fierce, but we defeat about 500 of them, before the Khergits retreat and regroup. We free boyar Vlan, and he is very happy to see us, as he had been captive for over 2 weeks. I wouldn't have survived that. The Khergits are treating the prisoners the same way, lords get the same treatment as commoners, and that is really bad. However, he didn't starve or get diseases, so he managed to survive in the dark dungeons in the steppe. We have only about 400 left in our army to fight with, and we decide to get inside Reyvadin to defend the town.

They have been regrouping all night now, and as the sun sets, we see that they have at least 700 men. It seems that their Khan came to help. In the evening, they start marching against the walls. Our marksmen fire many hard volleys against them, and they return fire, at least with a double amount of arrows.
They set up a ladder, and then they come up to us. However, our knights are defending the opening where the ladder is, and not even one Khergit passes through there in the whole assault. Finally, they decide that they can't breach through properly, and they retreat from the siege. We have successfully defended Reyvadin, but with a lot of casualties. I replace my men with freed prisoners, and my army is just as good as before.
Vaegir heavy cavalry charge the Khergits in the great battle.
The sun goes down as the Vaegirs turn out victorious.
The walls of Reyvadin under the siege.
