Chapter 37: Battle on three fronts
January 20. 1259
Since the peace with the Rhodoks one month ago, things have been going fairly well. However, a border incident with Swadia happened, and King Harlaus is not at all happy. It all begun with some Vaegir peasants that stole from Tadsamesh, a Swadian village, deeply tucked into our territories. It is understandable, that Harlaus is disappointed at this incident, because of their war with the Nords.
Both the Nords and the Swadians are really weak and the lords have all kinds of quarrels between them. There's a lot of defecting on the Nords, who mostly turn to the Rhodoks or us. Understandable, as we have a powerful economy and lots of military power. On the other hand, King Harlaus is getting paranoid. He thinks all his lords are going to defect, so he charges them with treason, and bans them from their kingdom. They also go to either the Vaegirs or the Rhodoks. It seems like we are the only stable kingdoms left in this hell hole...

The Khergits are hungering for more territories, and it seems like their Khan, Sanjar, is planning on declaring war with us. So be it. The Sarranids have, however, been badly beaten by the Khergits, so they are still admirable foes, compared to the Swadians or the Nords, who are claiming on to the last territories they have near the coast.
Lately, I have been training lots of men. In times of peace, you must prepare for war, a wise man once said. Pity there aren't any wise men left, only traitors, cowards and fools.

I guess I was right. The Khergits declared war upon us. There may be an effect on the other kingdoms to declare war on us too, while we are already busy on one front. Doru has been ready for this moment, and he has a plan ready: To take the entire lower steppe. That includes the city of Narra, Unuzdaq castle and Malayurg castle, and all their villages. Sounds a bit drastic, but I like the plan. The Swadians are near their breaking point, as Harlaus charged 2 lords for treason, on one day! The Nords have had defects, but King Ragnar tries to keep his head cold. He can't do that for too long though...
Doru has engaged into the Khergit territories with an admirable army already. He heads for the city of Narra. Intensely fortified as it is, he has all reason to believe that it will be a bloody siege. But as soon as Narra falls, the other castles are easy targets, with little supplies and troops.

Narra fell. Malayurg fell. Unuzdaq is a hard one though. But it will fall. The peasants there have to walk days to get to Tulga, where they can sell their goods. The Swadians and Nords made peace with each other, and soon, they declared war on us. They feel we are a too great threat. They want to balance out the power between the factions.
It's a pity though. I have never had any bad intentions or thoughts to the Swadians. Although, they are no great threat, and I will avoid fighting them. The Nords, however, are looking for a beating. And that beating will come from me, most likely. They are so weak now, that I could beat them alone, only if they didn't have all these top trained huscarls in their garrisons.
The Khergits are posing a threat to us, but I feel that our whole kingdom shouldn't stay on the eastern front, we need to focus on the west too. If we lose Dhirim or Wercheg to the Nords or the Swadians, it would be catastrophic for our economy and morale. Also, they would get a chance of recovering from these wars if they get some income and goods.

The Khergits have realized that this isn't the war they want to be in. They offer a peace treaty, and Yaroglek accepts it, as he has won much in this war, and doesn't want to lose it. The Rhodoks, however, are not happy to see us crush every opposing force, and joins in on the war. It is still against 3 factions, but this time, it is all in the west.
February 9. 1259
Dhirim was besieged by the tiny Swadian army! 300 men stood outside Dhirim. Unfortunately for them, Doru had amassed an army of 1200 men. We ambushed them, and they had to fight a great battle. Their noble knights, were not useful for too long, as our horsemen and archers plow them down. The entire event was chaotic. The entire Swadian army was crushed in the great battle. We could now loot freely on Swadian ground! Doru frowns.
«We will not have time to loot the Swadians. We will have to respond quickly on a mass attack from the Nords, on Tehlrog castle» he says.
The other lords sigh disappointedly. So much loot and wealth could be taken, but we simply didn't have time. There was this rumor that the Nords have amassed an army, greater than they ever have had before, even in their weakened state.
Soon, I hear the dreaded words from a scout. Reindi is besieged by 700 Rhodoks. I must hurry there, to aid the garrison!
The Swadians lost greatly at the battle near Dhirim.
