"Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge people with equity? No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth."
-Psalm 58

In the late winter months of the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand Two Hundred and Fifty Seven, the Empire of the Urceans was nascent, reaching its peak and controlling more land than ever before. It had swallowed Levantia whole and forged an Empire of gold and steel. It stretched from sea to sea, controlled most trade routes, and had one of the most powerful militaries in the known world.

Behind this great Empire was the House of Urce-Nero, of course, as they sat upon the throne since the foundation of the Empire by St. Julius I. A second house was almost equally as important, one that was able to turn the wealth and vision of the Urce-Nero's into military success and proper administration, the House of Cronis, who, in 1257, was headed by Marius the Elder, Lord of Justonium and Martial of the Empire.

Who was not involved in the forging of the Empire, however, was a man by the name of Benedictus Cronis, Lord of Sagia Castle on the outskirts of the Empire. A man whose primary descriptor among the other Lords is "nice", Benedictus was neither brutal nor savage; neither dishonorable nor unknown, but otherwise unremarkable. Benedictus had always languished in his brother's shadow, and, now a man of 57, had become the family's yes-man, always there to do their bidding. On his part, it was a comfortable existence and one he did not protest to.

A friend of Emperor Tiberius II since the days of the Northern Campaign, Benedictus found himself on the way to Imperial Capitol to celebrate the fourth year of the reign of the Emperor, when he and his retinue found themselves under attack by particularly vicious highwaymen, probably deserters. Knocked from his horse, Benedictus found himself unconscious and laying at the side of the road, at the mercy of those fighting around him.

Far from the fighting, he found himself now walking far above the Levantian continent, and from his vantage he could see the entirety of the Urcean Empire, and far in the distance, on the same plane above the land, a golden throne, and a man clothed in pure gold armor sitting upon it. Behind the throne shone a bright light in the shape of a cross, almost as if the sun had changed its shape. Benedictus found himself compelled and drew closer and asked, "Is that you, Lord?", to which the man responded "No, sir, draw closer still; the glory before you cannot begin to compare to the glory of the Lord. No, I am the one whose land is below, who forged forward with Christianity in the once pagan land below. I am the first Emperor, the Sainted Emperor, and I come bearing a message: Go. Serve the people of God, for they are in much distress. You shall know the calling when you see it." The cross behind the throne flashed so bright as to block the vision of old Benedictus, and then the light turned to darkness and the land below disappeared.

He awoke with a throbbing headache to find that his company had survived relatively unscathed, thanks to the chance arrival of the local constable and his men. Offering a reward but being refused, Benedictus and his party went on their way to Urceopolis, and he did not tell a soul of his vision of the "Sainted Emperor". Upon arriving to the celebration, murmurs and rumors of a land called Calradia circled, and this land was evidently in peril. Benedictus had heard of it once or twice before, but the concurrence of the rumors and gossip reached its climax when someone suggested "If only a Urcean Lord could sort that lot out!". It became evident what the vision meant. Benedictus would serve the people of Calradia. After the celebration he made his intention to go to Calradia known to the Emperor, who arranged for a ship but noted that he could take neither his wealth nor his men, but only as much armor as he could wear and some fish. Emperor Tiberius doubted Benedictus, but he would support the measure none-the-less, as he felt a genuine pity for the social stature of his friend. Publicly stating the reason to be gratitude to the Emperor, but of course having other, more private motives, Benedictus changed his personal standard to an image of St. Julius I, the founder of the Urcean Empire.

Sailing aboard the personal craft of the Emperor, Benedictus endured a long and hard journey before arriving in the port of a city called Praven. Looking towards what would hopefully be a bright new future for him in Calradia, he eagerly hauled his one belonging, his heraldic armor, through the city streets. It was not long, however, until Benedictus would again find himself in trouble...

1.1 - Ground Down from the Ground Up

Not long after setting foot on Swadia's golden shores did Benedictus Cronis find himself at great peril; walking along the city streets of Praven, he found himself away from the crowds in a back alley, attempting to make a shortcut to the nearest inn where he had planned to begin formulating his strategy for the continent and praying. Fate, as it would have, launched a different turn; a local emerged from the shadows unbeknownst to Benedictus and clubbed him in the back of the head with a large dull black wooden spade, knocking the noble unconscious and putting his small, hand-pulled wagon of belongings, in jeopardy. Fate turned back in his favor, however, as a local merchant, Ulric Fugger, found Cronis in his moment of distress and came to his aid, scaring off the thuggish brute and ensuring the well-being of Cronis's belongings. Fugger proceeded to take Cronis and his belongings into his home, and nurse the noble back to good health.

Upon awaking, the merchant explained the situation to Cronis and then made an offer to him; Cronis would help the merchant root out local bandits in exchange for denars, the local currency. Benedictus had little objection to this proposal, though he was unsure if he would make it his primary objective...

meetingulricfugger.png

The first task given by the merchant was to raise five or more men in order to ensure the safe return of the merchant's brother, which seemed to be a fair task for Cronis. He set out from the city in haste, to the local village of Veidar, and by way of cleverness and persuasion arranged a meeting with the village elder, in order to convince him to urge the men of the town to join Cronis in his newfound conflict with the bandits. The elder, however, was unreceptive and demanded that Cronis "never speak of this again".

unreceptiveelder.png

Dejected, Cronis remained in the village, and not a single volunteer talked to the noble, but Benedictus happened upon a pair of returning hunters in the village who sought to explore the world around them. After some smooth talking and with gold to match, the two joined the party of Benedictus, and they left Veidar at once.

Moving from village to village, including Iyindah and Azgad, both in the vicinity of Praven, he found more luck, recruiting nine eager recruits. Instead of consulting the elder, Benedictus in both cases simply began speaking to those who would listen in the village center; he spoke of a greater, Divine purpose, to his mission, but also mentioned that in the short run it would help alleviate local bandit activity and benefit the families of the villages. With a party of twelve, including himself, Benedictus was now ready to dispatch of the bandits, both for the gold and to harden himself in battle.

1.2 - Mission of Brotherly Love

Benedictus Cronis, still by all accounts a newcomer, and an unpolished (some might say fat) noble at that, was still trying to find his bearings in Calradia when he returned to Ulric Fugger, a merchant of Praven, and was tasked with dispatching some bandits. It would be the first engagement that Cronis had been in that could even be called a battle, despite his age of fifty seven. Cronis himself was somewhat excited for the opportunity, and sought to prove that he, too, could lead troops on the field.

Engaging the small party of hilly terrain, Cronis was knocked from his steed but managed to lead his unpolished soldiers to a victory over the bandits. It was not without loss, as one of the men, a former peasant farmer who went by the name Willus, died in combat, which shook the party and Cronis deeply. After giving him a proper Christian burial, Cronis met with the captive leader of the band of criminals, and, after hard interrogation, determined the location of the bandit hideout, where hostages were being kept, including the brother of the merchant Fugger.

charactercard.png

Making good time across the country side, Benedictus followed the tracks and the landmarks and arrived at the hideout of the bandits, which was a small area with good natural defenses near the town of Veidar; members of the party would speculate that the close location would explain the hostility of Veidar towards the noble.

Silently at night, Cronis and his band of soldiers attempted to stealthily make their way through the woods, and almost did so, if not for an alert bandit century who noticed them as they approached the holds of the hostages. A skirmished ensued, and Cronis and his band retreated without casualty and established camp nearby, until making another attempt at dawn. The fight ended rather quickly, as Cronis himself joined his troops and vanquished the enemy, sustaining injuries but no major casualties. After rescuing Fugger's brother, Cronis and the party were entitled to the ill-gotten goods of the bandits, which the party gladly claimed.

Very nice  , just you should make chapters a little longer

Thank you very much!

These aren't really chapters, just incremental updates...consider them "pages" to a chapter. I know the most recent post wasn't too long, but I couldn't manage to capture screenshots of the battle, which is why.

Thanks again

1.3 - Onwards and Offwards

Departing their early morning camp outside Praven, Benedictus found his way to the market by noon and sold all the loot he and the party had acquired during the scrape with the bandits, and it came out to be a manageable sum - after swift negotiations and offering his goods around, the shrewd Benedictus managed to acquire some eight hundred and thirty four denars for his trouble, which, while not an impressive sum, it was sufficient and needed. Cronis planned to use the money to hire more soldiers for his party, as well as save some for future expenditure and wages.

bartering.png

Whilst roaming the grounds of the city on the way to the tavern to meet his "partner", Ulric Fugger, Benedictus happened upon a pair of monks praying. Thinking nothing of it, the noble continued walking before one ceased their prayer and inquired of him, "Sir, I hear you are gathering a party of sorts to roam the land." Benedictus thought back to his vision for a moment, and said "Yes, Brother, I am. How may I be of assistance?" The Monk said to him "Our Abbot will let us go, and he has considered sending us to you for some time. He may need convincing, but if you offer to pay for the travel accommodations for us to leave the city, I'm sure he would not object." Benedictus smiled, joined them in prayer, and offered a hundred denars, which they gladly accepted and went off to prepare.

Reaching the Tavern, he went to talk to Fugger, but was first approached by a woman wearing armor, which he found peculiar. She said to him "My Lord, we have heard of your journeys ahead from local villagers, and, while you are not of fame, stories have spread. Myself and my sisters would like to join you; while, my Lord, you may find this to be irregular, we are trained in the art of warfare and will take a small amount of denars for the six of us to join. If you choose to hire us and keep us in different quarters whilst camped, we shall not complain." Not being a particularly discriminatory man, unusual for his age, Benedictus agreed to hire them but ensured that their quarters were separate, out of concern for the Monks in his company.

campfollower.png

He had been approached by men of the town, twelve of them, offering to join his party, which he accepted. Finally reaching the Merchant, praise and gold was heaped upon Benedictus, which he gladly accepted, and then the Merchant laid out a proposition. According to him, the Captain of the Guard in Praven had resulted in "villainy in order to recoup" a lost investment, and the Captain had been responsible for the attacks. Not being very susceptible to planning, but in a situation were he needed denars, Cronis agreed to lead a local militia against the Captain's bandits in the center of town.

leadingthemilitia.png

Going to the center of Praven Town, Cronis waited for the signal, to which, when given, he lead the militia into battle. The militia fought bravely and many men of the town fell to the blade of the bandits, a fate that almost befell Cronis himself. After sending down several bandits with his blade, three or four attacked Benedictus at his weakest, and he fell to the ground, only to see one of the bandits being run through by the sword of Ulric Fugger. The remaining bandits fled and the town was filled with cheering, as the Captain of the guard would be dragged off for a "conference" with the King. Cronis said to the merchant, "The Heavens alone have granted us victory", celebrating the standard of St. Julius I, to which the Merchant certainly did not object. "We shall meet again", said the Merchant. Cronis went to the marketplace to buy a new helm and then went off to camp.

atcamp.png

After finally returning to Camp for the night following his foraging efforts, Cronis let down his armor and began to relax inside his tent. He set down his helm upon the ground, looked at his own reflection in its top, and sighed. Perhaps, he thought, he was not intended to be an adventurer, and this was a mistake. This was not the life he was used to, and it was filled with some hardship. If he could contact the Emperor, he thought it possible that it could be arranged that he would go home. At that instant, one of the monks new to the party entered the tent and said "Sorry to bother you My Lord...but I couldn't help notice your standard."

Benedictus smiled. Perhaps it was coincidence. Perhaps it was divine provenance. Either way, it reminded Benedictus of his mission - to serve the people of Calradia, the people of God, in his own way. He said to the monk, "Come, sit. That is a standard of the Patron Saint of my home land, its founder, the Sainted Emperor, Julius I. He forged an Empire of God, turning a pagan land to a Christian one in a manner of a decade. He ruled fairly and evenly." The Monk smiled, and said of Benedictus "So you are of the land of the Urceans? Not many here know of it, mostly the Clergy as we are learned. Even still, we do not know much of it."

The two swapped stories about living in Urcea and living in the Abbey for some time, until the monk left the tent and retired to bed. Benedictus did the same; it had been a long, long day, starting with the attack on the bandit camp.

1.4 - Native Son

It was a foggy morning in Praven, despite the early spring time of year. A deep mist was set upon the harbor, but for Benedictus Cronis, it was the brightest day in a good deal of time. For a good hour he sat and scanned the bay until, with elation, he saw it; a ship bearing the standard of the Emperor of Urcea himself, dispatched for Benedictus upon his request. His son, Patroclus, of the House of Cronis, had been persuaded by the Emperor to join his father in Calradia. Benedictus had always been quite favorable to his son and their relationship was close, not only father and son but very much partners in business and in arms. There was no one in the world trusted more by the elder noble than his son, Patroclus.

Patroclus, a youth of 24, was considered by many nobles as everything his father was not; bright, persuasive, prudent, and politically savvy. He was both manipulating and honest, a man who could give both great loyalty but enact a great vengeance. His father considered him to be the brightest young man in the realm, a view shared by the Emperor himself, who approved of the young man's intent to join his father because of the trust he had in his abilities. At present, Patroclus's duties would not be to accompany his father on the battlefield, but rather, manage his affairs in Praven; Benedictus considered purchasing land for a productive enterprise within the city, which would be managed by his son. While not having the capital, Patroclus would "grease the wheels" of the local guilds and other officials in order to approve such a venture when the capital was available. Additionally, Patroclus would advocate on his father's behalf in the King's court, and manage his father's landed financial affairs. Patroclus was ensured a bright future in Calradia.

His father, Benedictus, set off. He knew what he would have to do to gain any sort of clout or capital within the land of Calradia; enlist into the armed service of a King or Lord, gain prestige through battlefield action, and proceed from there. He set off for the long journey from Praven towards one of Swadia's northern cities, where he hoped he might be able to enlist him and his party as a mercenary to one of the Counts there.

marchnorth.png

The march north was long and hard, encompassing a few days and several near-run ins. Carefully avoiding the invading armies of the Rhodok Republic, Benedictus led his band up and down the long paths north, including the path that took the band almost into the sight of Vyincourd Castle, under siege by Rhodok forces. Finally, after several days travel, the cliffs of Dhirim were in sight, and before long, Benedictus arrived in Dhirim's fair city.

arrivingindhirim.png

Entering the castle, he had the privilege of meeting not one but two of the Lords of the Swadian Kingdom, Despin and Plais. Approaching them, he engaged Despin in conversation, who immediately recognized Benedictus as the new arrival and commented on the standard, knowing of it but not its meaning. After a short conversation in which Benedictus explained it to be St. Julius I, and the significance of the Sainted Emperor, the two began speaking business, that is, politics. Knowing not to be forthcoming and ask to join as a mercenary, Benedictus instead asked if there was anything that was needed of him, and to his disappointment there was a task that he was not expecting. Asked to dispatch of a bloodthirsty killer by the name of Aels the Long, the noble reluctantly agreed, hoping to parlay the task into denars and into favor.

ameetingofminds.png

Departing from Dhirim once the sun rose, the party made way for Emirin, a town mercifully close to Dhirim, where Aels the Long was believed to be hiding. Entering the town, Benedictus doubted that any of his peers would give him up; indeed, they could not commit, and simply explained many travelers came to the town. Searching on horseback, he discovered a man of suspicious appearance and nervous character loitering behind a barn. Upon questioning, it became evident that he was the man whom was being hunted, and the two engaged in armed combat. Getting the better of Benedictus, the bandit struck his shield and sent him back and fled before Benedictus could mount his horse in pursuit. The Baron Despin was not happy, but in the end, offered Benedictus a mercenary position in the army of King Harlaus regardless, to which Benedictus gladly accepted.

Taking the advice of the Baron, he departed for a local training field, now a mercenary in the service of King Harlaus and the Kingdom of Swadia.

Benedictus had found his way into the system.

Good chapter, even better then previous
I have just one question, isn't it Dhirim located far east from other Swadian cities (not north) ?

You know what? I just realized my sense of the cardinal directions might be wrong. I always considered Praven south, Rhodoks east, Nords west, Sarranids far north...I suppose you're right!

2.1 - Preparations

As it would happen, Benedictus and party, now officially mercenaries of the King of Swadia, spent a great deal of time at the training field, trying to hone their skills and their battlefield prowess. The old noble himself, although not particularly well skilled in battle, would spar with his own men for their benefit in order to gain fighting experience.

training.png

After spending several days at the field, Cronis departed and searched for a more rigorous training exercise for his troop, in order to prepare them for the horrors and challenges of war. Patrolling around Dhirim's fair city in search of bandits, Benedictus quickly discovered a troop of Rhodoks raiding Nomar; his natural sense of justice drove him forward, but he knew he could not; the Rhodok army was both larger and more experienced, so he had to flee from Nomar to continue his patrol. Being disappointed by the lack of bandits around Dhirim, Benedictus and the party headed West, towards Uxkhal, only to be pursued by the dastardly raider Count Laruquen of the Rhodoks. The pursuit went on for about an hours time until Cronis and party managed to make it further west. Not too long after that pursuit, Cronis began a pursuit of his own that lasted some time - a small band of deserters, whom the party closely trailed east, and Cronis finally met up with the group well into enemy territory - in the valley of Veluca, the paradise of the Rhodoks. The fighting was more fierce than anticipated; the deserters, much less numerous but more familiar with the terrain and better trained, took the lives of many of the combatants.

brush.png

Finally emerging victorious at a great loss, Christian burials were done in honor of the fallen. The much-depleted troop was somewhat reinforced by four liberated peasants, who had been held captive by the deserters. The only bright spot in the victory was a decent share of loot - new, stronger armor for Benedictus, and weapons that could be sold at great profit. Some of the soldiers in the troop, all quite raw, gained combat experience in order to avoid such another defeat.

The troop was closely pursued by the Rhodok warlords Tellrog and Gelruchs, but the small size of the troop allowed a somewhat easy escape back to Uxkhal, which, to the great surprise of Benedictus, was not a safe territory either; one of the largest armies he had ever seen, under the command of Doge Graveth, sovereign of the Rhodok Republic, was patrolling the country side. In order to try and get his force back to fighting shape, Cronis decided not to spent much time in Uxkhal, and to retreat towards Suno under the cover of night. Fortunately, the forces of the Rhodoks did not occupy any land north of the river separating the two countries, so Cronis decided to make camp outside the wealthy city of Suno, after entering the city and selling the acquired loot. He could not profit from it, because he returned to camp with much-needed bread to supplant the supplies of the troop.

newarmor.png

After making camp for the night, the troop and Cronis set out early the next morning for the unfortunate business of finding replacement troops for the ones lost in battle. Traveling to the villages of Gisim, Ryiblet and Ruluns, the old noble encouraged the young men of the town to join him. He noticed something though, some growth within him that he had never noticed before; he spoke with confidence, and in a persuasive tone. When he spoke, people listened, and were enthralled. Speaking of the glories of defeating the Rhodoks that were ahead and the chance for wealth and to make a name for oneself, people were drawn to Benedictus. He had never noticed this in Urcea, where his words were nothing more than filler at a celebration for whichever Lord had won a recent military victory. He was able to recruit eleven Swadian men from the three villages, a good start. Working further, the troop marched through the night into the outskirts of the lands of the Kingdom of the Nords, which, aside from the brief expedition near Veluca, marked the first time Benedictus had left the Kingdom of Swadia since arriving in Calradia. Traveling to Aleden, five young Nords answered his call, to which Cronis was thrilled.

enteringnordland.png

This was a land which Cronis enjoyed; the party stayed in Aleden overnight, and Benedictus enjoyed the finest local Mead. In the morning, the party marched further up the coast to Kulum, where they stayed for a bit. While there, Benedictus received a letter.

To my loyal and faithful servants,

With much consideration for the needs of the realm and the needs of the nobility within,
I, King Harlaus, by the Grace of God, Sovereign Protector of this Realm, of all Swadians King,
Defender of the Faith, et cetera et cetera, have decided to confer upon Count Haringoth
the marshalship of the Kingdom.

While never having personally met Haringoth, Benedictus had heard he was a good man. Looking for further men and with an interest in the land, the party ventured still further north to Buillin, where two men were willing to join the party. Considering his location, Benedictus then decided to travel to Tihr and the surrounding villages before swinging south, back towards Swadia. Visiting Rizi and Haen outside Tihr, six more Nord volunteers were recruited. Benedictus entered the tavern of the great city of Tihr, but before long, a belligerent and intoxicated man took to arms against the Urcean noble. Benedictus quickly dispatched this man after trying to reason with him.

drunk.png

After the nasty business of fighting off the poor sap who lost his life, Benedictus went upstairs in the tavern, only to discover a lovely young woman standing about. With somewhat fatherly instincts kicking in, the elder noble asked the girl what she was doing in such a place, to which she explained that she was the daughter of a merchant, and had been married off against her will. She desired to leave Tihr, and Benedictus, knowing he could use a good hand as well as a traveling companion, offered to her the chance to join the party, which she accepted. Her name was Ymira.

meetingymira.png

Across from Ymira was another young woman in distress, this one of a foreign culture and known as Nadia. Her problem, as she told Benedictus, was that she was the item of desire of a mad old village elder, from whom she escaped. She seemed slightly more experienced of an adventurer and a warrior than Ymira, so Benedictus accepted her into the party as well.

meetingnadia.png

After meeting the two women, Cronis and the party departed Tihr and made way southward towards Swadia, stopping first in the village of Jelbegi to recruit one more young Nord before departing the Kingdom of the Nords entirely. The party crossed the border and began to make way for Tahlberl, but Benedictus heard stories of a local bandit group, and he intended to make sure his new troops got some combat experience, as well as acquiring more denars and loot. While in pursuit, he heard a rumor that the war was not going well for Swadia, and that Vyincourd Castle had fallen into the hands of the damn Rhodoks. While he could not know this for certain, he continued the pursuit of the party of bandits, which nearly took them over the Rhodok border, but Cronis was able to lead his men in a forced march to catch the bandits near Haringoth Castle. The battle turned out to be advantageous; Baron Barenz of the Swadian Kingdom was close by, and reinforced the troop of Cronis.

banditbattle.png

The fighting was savage, but the battle much more conclusive than the last; only three brave men of the company fell that day, with several troops gaining significant combat experience. Fourteen bandits fell, and one survived, which Benedictus decided to take captive in order to raise denars by way of ransom.

After a long few days of preparations and fighting, which had brought the party from Veluca in the Rhodok Republic to Tihr in the Nordic Kingdom, Benedictus felt that he and the hard-worked troop needed some rest. On the way back to Praven, he had noticed Veidar, a close village, had been sacked; a worrying sign for the Kingdom. Still, once in the great city, the old noble was able to acquire several hundred new denars from the sale of looted goods and the ransoming of the prisoner. Whilst on the way out of the town to camp, his son greeted him, and the old man broke his usually stoic demeanor and gave his son a hug, which the young man returned in kind. "It's been quite a long week, my boy", said the noble with a smile. "I have good news for you father", said the young man. "While you were away, I was able to acquire several acres of land in your name in the vicinity of the city. Here are the profits from that land to date, father". Patroclus handed his father a small purse of about two hundred and forty denars, for which the father was much appreciative and much needing.

He was proud of his son. Not because he had simply gotten him money, no, because his son was making something of himself in Calradia, and was such an upstanding young man as to consider his father in the equation.
