Well, considering it came out in May and some errors that have been there since the beginning still haven't been addressed, I suspect waiting isn't an optimal strategy.

Seriously? You'd think there'd be an "Unofficial Patch" or something.

Not really sure how many troop types there were in Fire and Sword. I only got to play for a little bit but it looked to me like there were your basic infantry, cavalry, and archers. Then of course missile cavalry. The only real difference is I believe each set can be equipped with guns.

Ok, so pretty much like Warband then.

The troop types are pretty similar to Warband, especially if you lump both archers (which really only the Crimeans have any of) and firearm troops into the "missile troops" category.  The problem is each faction's troops all have different names, so until you get used to all the names and which ones are melee cavalry, which ones are melee infantry, which ones are firearms troops (cavalry or infantry), well, you get the picture!  (And you can't equip any troops with guns that don't start off with them to begin with, excepting your companions, of course.)

For example, these are the troop names of the Crimean Khanate: Nomad, Bajrak, Kapikulu, Oglan, Jasaq, Seymen, Asak-bey, Mirza Chambul, Nokhor, Circassian, Nogai.  Then each faction has access to different types of mercenaries, so the Crimean Khanate has access to Turkish mercs: Janissary, Cebelu, Azap.  The names aren't exactly descriptive; you can't tell which ones are infantry, foot archers, horse archers, firearms troops (foot or mounted), etc, just from the name.  So one has to not only get used to your own faction troops, but those of all the other factions so you'll know how to counter them.  And each faction has roughly the same number of troop types as the Crimeans (but I won't bore you by naming any others).

It's also not exactly helpful to mouse over an enemy lord and he has so many different troop types (both from his own faction and from rescued prisoners) that the list goes off the screen!

So, basically if I buy WF&S, I'll need to print out some sort of guide and have it at hand? That doesn't bother me so much as the issue with the bugs.  That kinda dampens the attraction of playing as a swashbuckling mercenary musketeer.

Also, a quick question for my readers:  Any mods I should download for Connor? So far, I'm using Diplomacy, Calradia in Darkness, Arena Overhaul, and Yes! More Horses.  I have 15th Century Weapons in but I'm not sure I implemented it correctly.

I have a mod that is fun, but I don't think it would really add anything to the story line as it is more of a bunch of tweaks with a few additions to the game than an actual mod... that and I would have to convince my friend to release it (its his creation) and that is notoriously hard.... he doesn't like making his work public for some odd reason.

One last note on Fire and Sword, again I only got to tinker with it for a little bit so I cannot say for sure but it seemed to me that if you get a mass of gunpowder troops you can pretty much steamroll anyone. I seem to remember cheating to get a bunch of money (yes I know cheating is not the same but over time you could do this without cheats) and hiring a ton of polish mercs or whatever faction arming them with wheelock muskets and pretty much my little band of 100 or so steamrolled everything.

Chapter 10

The North as of the beginning of this chapter

I dawdled around Reyvadin for a few more days, and heard that Curaw had been taken by Swadia, splitting the Vaegir kingdom in two.

Leaving Reyvadin, I ran into Boyar Doru, who contracted me to free his son, Boyar Taisa, from Malayurg Castle.  Ought to be fun, if not bloody difficult.

TheMission.jpg

The mission

It was only a day's ride to the castle.  I was able to disguise meself as a pilgrim, under the pretense of seeking shelter from bandits.  There were quite a few archers to deal with, not to mention heavily-armoured guards...I considered briefly just Boyar Taisa, but that doesn't make for good stories, now, does it?  It does, however, make for still-living Connors.

I decided, though, that if I was gonna have to pay a huge chunk of money, then it would be Connor's money, it would be Khergit money.  I bought meself a lance and headed out in search of caravans to rob.

I intercepted one heading back to Narra from the Sarranid desert.  35 against 1...my greatest challenge yet.  Still, I knew how the Khergit fought; the mass of them would be useless, barely-trained guards who would try to dogpile on me and wear me down with numbers.  The rest, the archers, were the problem.  They would try to bring me down from afar while the bloody meatshields did the dirty work.  Still, Fred and I were too smart and too tough for 'em...I let the fools chase me while I killed the archers or cut down their horses, reducing their mobility.  When they were dealt with, I slew the guards.  I was incredibly lucky...they very nearly brought us down, and poor Fred took quite a few arrows, but in the end, we stood victorious over their rotten corpses.  'Twas me way of tellin' old Sanjar Khan to kiss me bum.

The nearest friendly city was Dhirim.  I hadn't been to the Wasted Whore in quite awhile, so I stayed there for the night, drinkin' all the slumming noble brats under the table.  The next morning, I sold what I could of the loot, bringin' me over 2000 denars.  The rest I took to Reyvadin, where I was ambushed by three bandit-looking types.  They seemed too well armed for this just to be a mugging...someone musta paid 'em to take me life.  Busey tells me that it was the Buddy Holly-haters.

Thinking I now had enough gold to tempt Urumuda Noyan, I set out once more for the steppes.  One man, I figured, would not present much a threat to the horse-lord, and he'd be more willing to talk to me.  How wrong I was...the bastard wouldn't even let me speak.  He was only interested in capturing or killing me, thinking that by bringin' a host of 52 men out he could threaten me into going peaceably.  One thing that Connor does not do, is surrender to a meatheaded over-blown steppe bandit who has sex with horses, and I decided that if I was going to die, I'd take him with me, and as many of his inbred bastards with me.  The cold wind was blowing on the steppe, and it was a good day to die.

A good day to die...

Urumuda was the first I saw...he slashed at Fred, but me faithful friend kept going.  I managed to wheel around, dodging the arrows and pointy things they flung at us, and unhorsed Urumuda.  Not long after, the bastards killed Fred, but I was still alive, and rose to see the bastard coming at me with his sword and shield.  I smiled, and dropped me shield. He might've bested me in numbers, but he was out of his league.  One of his inbred**** me in the back with a javelin, but I refused to fall; not til I'd taken Urumuda's head.  In one blow, I sent him to the ground..  Today was a good day to die, indeed.  Not three seconds after the rest of his forces brought me down.  He might've won in the end, but I showed him that numbers do not equal power.

The casualties

Turns out, I was not dead at all.  I awoke to Busey slapping me in the head, lying in a tent, with a bunch of baggage, I know not how many days later.  Me boots had been stolen...again, but I found me weapons and most o' me money nearby.  They'd only put one guard around the tent, thinking me dying, but, as I always do, I proved them wrong.  I slit his throat and took off, boots or no boots.  I found Fred, tied up with the rest of the horses and rode away into the night while the Khergits fought with a group of Vaegir.

Connor and Fred would ride again.  Just as soon as I got new boots, that is.  I rode as fast as I could out of the steppes, back to Dhirim, where I caught the armor merchant just before he closed his stand for the evening and bought boots, then I crawled into the Wasted Whore for few well-earned drinks.  I heard rumors that the Swadians had besieged Narra, and that the Sarranids had declared war upon the Khan as well.  I smiled.  That ought to take 'em down a few notches.

I decided not to renew me contract with the Vaegir.  It's time for a spot o' vacation, at least for the time being, but the business with Boyar Taisa had to be dealt with.  I had three weeks left to do it, and I'm not one to just back out of a job.  Now, since me contract expired, I was technically at peace with the Khergits, and could've ransomed him, but they'd really made me mad, what with nearly killin' me for what seems like the fifth time and all.  While in Dhirim, I bought meself a curved, Khergit bow, and a lot of arrows.  I figured it'd help out a bit. I managed to talk me way into the castle, once again under the story of wanting to sign on with the Khergits (these idiots have no sense of pattern recognition...)

They let me in, and I was quickly able to kill the jailer and take the keys, ducking into the the dungeon just in time to avoid the usual hail of arrows.  I led the Boyar out, taking cover next to the wall, were the bastards would have to face us up close.  We killed the most heavily-armored guard, and I told the Boyar to stay put behind cover.  I ran to the other wall, dodging the arrows, hopin' to split their focus.  One came around, trying to get a good shot on the Boyar, but I managed to flank him and cut him down.  On the ground, Taisa handled himself well, despite being a bit sickly.  I finished off the rest, and we made our way out.  Boyar Doru, when I next met him, gave me 1500 denars for me trouble, which would undoubtedly be spent on ale.

Up the stairs...

Now, 'twas time for me vacation.  I figured I'd head to Yalen, the Rhodok kingdom, where they have some very fine beaches frequented by scantily-clad women.  Seemed a good a place as any.  I made it there a few nights later, and as I sat in Nancy's Harbor Cafe, something struck me brain. Rolf! Bloody hell, I'd forgotten Rolf! There was no way I was gonna pay a ransom to those Khergit scum, so the next morning I decided to head back to the steppes.

I was up before the sun rose, and headed like a bat outta hell for Halmar.  The city was still beseiged by the Sarranids, which I figured was a good enough distraction. Boyar Druli, it turned out, was still trapped in there with him.  I managed, once again, to slay the jailer before he could get his guard up and took the keys.  Ordering the Boyar and Rolf to stay back, I hid behind one of the courtyard's walls and waited for the archers and throwers o' pointy things to get closer...every so often, I shot an arrow at 'em to make 'em mad, with Busey shouting encouragement at me in the form of non-sensical acronyms.

Waiting...

Two of them came close, thinking that they were better swordsmen.  They, of course, paid for their arrogance with their blood.  Another tried firin' arrows into the melee, but I quickly dodged behind cover again.

The trap is sprung!

I managed to lure him back into the courtyard o' doom, while his buddy waited to turn me into a pincushion.  This one, after I killed his friend, tried to use me own tactic against me, waitin' behind the other side of the doorway with a spear.  I managed to parry his thrusts, close the distance, and split his skull.  The three of us managed to ride out to the gate, into the Sarranid lines, hollering like maniacs.  Rolf asked if he could join up with me again, but I refused, seein' as how, with me loose ends tied up, I'm on bloody vacation.

Well, if you didn't notice, I've changed the title of the AAR from "Connor: Life of a Hired Blade" to "Connor: To No Man I Kneel".  What hijinks will befall our hero next? Tune in next time for Chapter 11:  Connor's Vacation, or, How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Rhodok Women!

Have a good weekend, dudes.

Ah, I see now! Yes, that sounds pretty confusing. Thanks.

Thanks for the new chapter, these are coming out pretty fast now.

There are very few guides to be had--the WFaS community isn't as active as this one.  One of the posters there did do some extremely helpful guides for the Poles, Crimeans, and Swedes, from which I took the troop names in my post above.  I advise reading that forum thoroughly, though; even though it isn't that active, there's still a lot of helpful information buried in there.  Unearthing it is the trick!

Also, a quick question for my readers:  Any mods I should download for Connor? So far, I'm using Diplomacy, Calradia in Darkness, Arena Overhaul, and Yes! More Horses.  I have 15th Century Weapons in but I'm not sure I implemented it correctly.

I generally recommend Polished Native Troops for some tweaks that raise some underpowered troops such as Horse Archers and Vaegir Marksmen to their true potential (without making them overpowered).  Doesn't add or change any items or graphics, nor does it change faction or game balance.  The link is in my sig.

If you're looking for swashbuckling Musketeer action, I suggest either The Eagle and the Radiant Cross, or wait until the Renaissance mod is finished. I believe it'll be set in Calradia's Renaissance, no less... so one of Connor's illegitimate offspring may rise to the occasion!

You just made me think of "Lobo: Infanticide", where all the main character's bastard children form an army to try and kill him.

It's from a Manowar song.  Thought it would sound more epic.

A quick question; if I write a Warband-related story (or at least start writing one) can I post the thread here, in the 'The Warlord's Den - Single Player' forum? It's not an AAR, just a fiction.

An AAR can be anything involving the game. Like the ones I used to write had nothing to do with the quest and it just started randomly. To answer shortly, yes.

OK, thanks. I might post a couple of chapters on this board then.
