A tweak request... >_>

Since TheMageLord is like the master of editing raw scripts, I'm wondering if he'd consider trying something.

The problem:  When fighting large battles together with allies, they charge off in all directions even when it makes no tactical sense to do, and tend to get raped by enemies whom they could have defeated if they stuck together.

Solution:  Make allied troops under your command?

I'd like a command to tell my own guys to "Follow those idiots!" without having to follow them myself.

Yeah, but they still run off after caravans and such at the slightest provocation.  And I noticed in .960 that as you whittled down the garrison of a town or castle, some of your allies would abandon you until the odds got closer.  The Marshal needs more direct control over allies.  Right now there's too much wiggle room for uncooperative lords and not enough command options.  Even "Stay! Bad Lord! Stay!" would be helpful.

I was thinking of commanding them in battles, not on the world map, my bad.

I was referring to the battle screen as well, not the world screen.  That doesn't sound like it would be a very easy thing to change.  I'm talking about, when you're in a fight with 200 foot soldiers versus 200 Khergits, if everybody would just stick together in a tight body you could own the horselovers without a problem.  Instead, your allies try to chase down the horses on foot, and get ripped to shreds because Khergits are the masters of that kind of fighting.  If I was able to give orders to all troops on the field, I could just tell everybody to hold ground and stand close, and we'd be fine.

A problem might be that allies are exactly that, 'Allies'. Soldiers follow their leader, it stands to reason that they wouldn't take orders from you and ignore the orders of their own lord.

If you were allied with man hunters or a party which has no lord (e.g. Castle garrisoned troops) then they should follow you, but other than that you just gotta trust the judgment of the other commander.

Playability is more important than realism.  But if you really want to talk realism, then realistically the guy that charges out onto the plains and tries to do battle with mounted archers 1-vs-1 while on foot would die, his men would be slaughtered or flee, and somebody else would take over his lands.  Which sounds like a lot more scripting.

I don't know if it's just me or something. Sometimes, the lords just let me do all the fighting while he pull his troops in the line behind. Even worse was that I got to bring most troops into battle while my allied lords obviously got much bigger party size. Maybe they had found out that I was a spy sent by Lady Isollo?

Just noticed this thread

The tweak is hardly necessary IMO, since you already command them if you're the marshal - it's realistic for them to take command of their army unless you're their commander. But, you asked for it you got it

Go into scripts.txt and find this script:

Change that 1 to a 0 and you'll always be in command, even if you're helping the King himself.

-edit- Or, if you want to have them command themselves even if you ARE the marshall, leave the 1 alone and change the 0 to a 1. You could also change the 0 to a 1 if you want even lordless parties like manhunters to use the AI instead of your orders.

Thank you. I can now take over King Graveth.

so how do u stop other lords from running off after caravans and stuff when u have specifically told them to follow u?

How about a tweak that allows your allies to do their tactics when you are the marshall?

I always loved the flanking... which is now much harder :<

Actually, realistically, the guy that charges out onto the plains while looking an army of fast horselovers with bows dead-on tends to get ignored, stomped to death, and...Hmm. King awards lands to the nearest guy who hasn't stepped outside his castle for a decade.

Fortunately, your soldiers aren't smart enough to make their own decisions[or they'd all be chased down as they run in random circles], and you get to command them. Generally means 50 "STAND CLOSER"'s and a good bit of follow me this river so we can pwn them and their horses, too!

Or, in my case, several stand togethers, "Screw it, there's 60 freaking Nord Huscarls forming a shieldwall, let's go see how many I can down before they reach my shieldwall." The shieldwall rocks. It's like: *Line of shields* *Scattered group of enemies* *Some make it to the shield wall and manage to tag it, others die as they get hit by everyone in range.*

It's super effective!

TOTALLY OFF TOPIC. Truthfully, if somebody could script it, custom orders. "KNIGHTWALL" command might be your knights couching their lances, riding alongside each other in a wall, with 2 lines behind them.[Carnage!]
"PHALANX" could be where 2 smaller groups of people[or more] break off from the main one and attack from the sides and back, much like the Romans.[Who conquered the entire world using this technique xD]
SHIELDWALL could be a bunch of guys holding up tower shields while archers, smartly scripted to find higher ground behind the shieldwall or to arch their shots into the air..
But, you know, custom. It would make everyone's strategy unique. and what if lords had a few of their own? YEAH IMAGINE THAT! Battles decided by more than just stay together, advance and kill everything in your path![much like the Romans]
