Sketch 4: Heir - Who will your son become? Will he be the spitting image of his father, treading the same familiar paths? Or will he travel an unknown road, building a legacy from nothing?
My favorite by far.

Even though it's not adressed to me, I would like to suggest the Druzhinnik. There's something really intimidating about that unit that your art-style would capture well, in my opinion. Brilliant work so far!

Sounds good, thanks for the idea

My favorite by far.

Someone said the same thing on the Reddit, it suprises me, can I ask why?

Nothing fancy, I just pick something. The knight was a recommendation on the reddit. Someone has recommended a cataphract, which I will do at some point. Someone suggested a king/queen. Do you have an idea?
I personally like the idea of the Fiann troop quite a lot and I would like to see you try to illustrate one. However if you feel like drawing something that most people probably aren't as quite used to seeing, I would recommend drawing the Arboreal unit which I believe is from the Brotherhood of the Woods minor faction of Vlandia.
The Brotherhood of the Woods started as a Vlandian peasant movement, hiding out in the forests, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. However, it encountered the problems that any long-running rebel movement might – it needed to ensure a steady supply of food, and also ensure that none of the poor would dare earn a bag of coin by informing on them. Slowly but surely, it began to make use of extortion, terror, and corrupt deals with the local authorities to survive, becoming little different from any other organized bandit group in Calradia

In hindsight maybe posting a mounted cavalry unit or horse archer might be better to add more diversity into your collection. And the archer is my favourite of all the one's you've done so far, the pose being the main reason.

Its probably a combination of the large helmet on the tiny body with the ambivalent look on the child's face as he holds the training sword with two hands. This is a child destined to a life of violence, it doesn't matter what he has to say about it so he might as well face it without complaint.

I think the same character with him in a kind of sloppy defensive pose holding up the shield so he can hardly see and holding the sword too low because of the weight with a determined mouth and scared eyes would be a great companion sketch.

That's really interesting, I get something completely different from it, there's no right answer of course, but that's one of the things that makes art so interesting - how it relates to each individual differently.

Thanks for the pic, that helps. I'll be sure to get that one in there.

Day 1: That axe wouldn't work. For one, it's bit too big, but more importantly the way head is fixed on to a shaft wouldn't work. This is how that axe should look:

lend your body to science and let me check if it doesn't work.

I was missing this... I love this sketches, because of your style and design. My favorite, Heir; that helmet for Battania could be very interesting. :fruity:

Finally some high quality freehand art i was eager for!
Keep up the amazing work, i would gladly see more like this !

Love this one. It reminds me of the illustration I use as my avatar.

It's an illustration from a sourcebook for the pen and paper RPG Pendragon. It was made by Arnie Swekel.

I see a lot of impressive spirit in these boys, dreaming of knighthood and spending a lot of effort and heart on assembling some knightly gear with what means they have.

So I'm thinking I'll just keep updating the original post and adding the dailys on to that so people can easily see all the sketches. Any reason not to do that?

I think that's fine, that way people don't have to search through the post to find new ones. Add them to the first post.

How many hours does it take per sketch? They're dope.

They're all different. The horse has taken me the least amount of time, about 3 hours I think. The Knight took the most, about 6 or 7.

That's closer to what I was envisioning. The sword and shield are clearly made by the boy, his clothes indicate he's poor, the son of a peasant probably or worse. Yet his helmet is of very fine quality, though battered and dirty. So that begs the question, where did he get the helmet? Did he scavenge it from the leftovers of a battle fought near his home that left him an orphan? Or is it a token left behind for him by his Father off to war - who knew he probably wasn't coming back. But it's neat to hear what story different people see in it.

Your dream character?
Humphrey?
Callum in its hound armor?

I like all these ideas. And theres plenty of days left to get them all in (nervous laughter)

Thanks for the support everyone, I'm gald some people are enjoying these and that it passes the time a bit.

I love these! A fun idea might be to sketch king/general/tournament armors. I love to see unique helms that can be really different from a faction's general look. Or perhaps a high-class mercenary (maybe empire?).

They are digital, I only used 3 brushes for these. A brush that I call calligraphy, it's just a round brush that is squished a little. A soft airbrush, and a smudge brush that just smears paint.

Someone on the reddit suggested I do a big group image at the end since I'll have give or take 27 figures, I'll do that one wide format. Also I might do some other scenes that aren't figures between now and then. Thanks for the suggestion

Speaking of passing the time, over on the reddit there is a lively debate about whether or not an archer would be shooting the arrow on the right side of the bow. Now let me first say, that when doing this illustration, I knew nothing about archery and I arbitrarily placed the arrow. But it's been neat to learn how much there is to archery. Someone posted this video that addresses what I guess is a commonly held belief - that not only do archers now and historically not shoot from the inside of the bow, but it's impossible to do. There's even a sub category of that that says, yes you can shoot from the right side, but only with thumb grip, not 3 finger. A couple of cool videos have been posted in response to this by other users much more educated than I. If anyone is interested here they are:

Either way, I'll certainly be more informed in any future archery illustrations.

i have a two hand-made bows and i shot from rigth side to shot with speed and left to shot with more precision, pick the arrow when shot from the rigth and pick the rope with 3 fingers when shoot from the left

Interesting, one more for right side
