Many games have different types of Save systems.
Take Mount and Blade for example.
It allows only one save slot per character. It does allow the choice of saving any time you like, or saving only when you quit. But thats it. One save per character.
Now, my position is that this limits the enjoyment a player can have, and here is my reasoning:
The key point is choice. It forces players to play a certain way, often unnecessarily
I am not saying that such a method is wrong, merely that it restricts freedom.
The advantages of a multiple slot system is just that, freedom. If players prefer to have only one savegame, then they can restrict their saving to one slot. If players want multiple backups, then that option is available.
Certainly, many will argue in favor of one method over the other. That is not my point. I am just saying that with the multiple slot system, BOTH sides can have their cake, and eat it to.
