A question, if I may...

Hi everyone,

This is my firts post here, two days into playing M&B.

Before I ask my question, please let me assure you that I have searched for an answer to my question in the various -and helpful- FAQ and Q&A threads, but couldn't find one.

So, here goes:

I know that I must give a "padded cloth" to Marnid to get him in my party. The thing is, I don't know HOW to give him the armor. Do I need an armor specifiaclly called "padded cloth" or any padded armor? I've already bought a couple of padded armors from the trader in the first city, but Marnid does not offer any new dialogue options, and my character keeps saying that he'll "think about it?. What is it that I am missing?

Apologies if this question has been asked and answered a gazillion times. Thank you in advance for your time.

There is a specific type of armor called Padded Cloth. When you have such an item in your inventory, your dialogue options with Marnid will change.

Thank you both, Maolvar and Lancer!

I guess it's a question of patience and luck now for that specific armor to turn up...oh, well, off to kill some bandits...

It doesn't matter what kind of "Padded Cloth" you give him, by the way. "Tattered" will do just as well as normal or "reinforced".

Good luck with getting the dropkick..
you may find that the other npc (Borcha) is cheaper to get and way more useful... He's in a jail somehwere so talk to local counts...

Oh and do everyone a favour, don't be afraid to make the topic tell people what the message is about...
Have fun dude..

Maybe one reason we keep getting questions about the "padded cloth" that Marvin/Margarine/Mervyn/Marnid/KingHenryIV/Melvin needs is that the padded cloth suggests some sort of towel or washcloth or scarf rather than a yellow outfit that provides some protective armor.

I would suggest changing "padded cloth" to "yellow cloth garment" or something more obviously an outfit. It's a minor thing, quickly discovered, but changing the wording should help. (Not in suggestions because who reads them a week later?)

I agree Jonno...
Or at least amke it that if you bring him something better than padded cloth he'll accept that...
I mean is he stupid or something?

Padded cloth you say?
yes!
What about this nice suit of platemail?
no, i like being knocked unconcious...

i actually thought it was somethin like a kerchief....
should change it to "quilted armour" or something

"A padded cloth or better kind of armor" would work better, yeah. Might make the dialogue a bit trickier to code, I suppose, if you have a bunch of different armors in your inventory.

quilted armour by charmen, extra soft, match it against other quilted armours and you will find it is far superior.

Besides, once you give him any type of armour, he will take a better one once you leave the city.

I don't think a 'cloth or better' thing could be done with the current conversation system. It can check for specific items, but I don't remember an operation that looks for 'highest armor value in inventory' or anything.
I think this could could be a rewording for Marnid's cloth conversation.
Original:
Not really. I guess I will have to learn it all the hard way, through battle. But what worries me really is that I have no armor. If I enlist now, they will surely place me among the peasant levies, and you know what that means. I will be butchered in the first encounter with the enemy. If only I had some serviceable armor, even a suit of padded cloth. Sigh.
Possible rewording:

If you didn't catch it, I'm saying to capitalize Padded Cloth and maybe add the word 'armor' to the end.

Adding the word armor would help a lot, I was a little confused. "He wants warmer bedsheets? How brave and heroic he is."
