A question about horseflesh...

Recently a fellow poster told me he sometimes buys lame horses cheap and heals them up with wound treatment skills. I tried it out myself...bought a lame horse to heal but ended up dragging him around with me way too long. However, lame horses I've picked up on battlefield do heal up and rather quickly. Is there a lameness slider on these beasts? Are some more lame than others, but lame all the same ? (like all the Rhodok lords in this game)

Another question (because I'm too lazy to experiment), do you get a better price selling a Steppe or Desert Horse in places which don't normally have them, like Wercheg or Praven?

sorry, I dont know but I would like to add a question:

Is there a way to recover the heavy, spirited or champion präfix if the horse gets woundet or is the ability lost?

They never regain the positive modifier after being lame.

I haven't noticed any price changes for horses in different towns.  As for the wound treatment, it may just be a random chance for healing, because I've kept horses with me a long time without healing.  Long enough to have healed them if it was just a matter of hitpoint recovery.  Not really positive, but it at least seems that way.

Do you have any high-level doctors? I carry around Jeremus (21 INT) and, even when he was ~15 INT, he was able to heal a lame horse about every other day.

I dont even bother with anything above Heavy Hunters because of horses going lame. Heavy Hunters aren't really all that expensive, they are common enough and they are one a few points shy of anything else. I'm not going to pay 60,000 for a champion horse that could go lame and never get properly healed.

... read the title and thought we had a new source of food in game.

Got excited thinking there was a use for all these lame saddle horses I find that are barely worth taking to the marketplace

Nope. Just the high-speed cattle and invisible sheep.

Yes, I'm using Jeramus...I think his first aid, wound treatment and surgery skills are all at 5. I am healing lame horses at about that rate, but strangely, not the Lame Sumpter I bought just as a test.

Have you tried putting the horse at the start of your inventory?

As a side-note; I usually carry around quite a few horses. I have something like 4 warhorses, 4 hunters, a few coursers, and then random other horses. I never hold onto swayback horses; I rarely if ever pick them up as anything but a last resort.

I'm the doctor and usually stop at 5(+2) WT, so effectively 7.  Some horses heal overnight, while others take weeks.  They all eventually heal, but it does seem that the ones which take weeks are taking longer than they would if it was just a matter of regaining hitpoints at a set rate per WT skill.  I can't verify that at all, it just seems that way.

I'm patient though.  I just check them after resting and distribute them to companions when they are healed.  I don't mind if it takes a while.

I always carry 6 spare horses, 2 of each type... so even if 1-2 of them are lame, I've got a horse i need.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I have discovered a fluctuation in horse pricing which seems to be on the supply side. I dumped a load of steppe horses for 59d at Tulga, but in Ichamur they would pay only 54d. (I know, not much of a difference), but a day or two before I dumped a load of steppe horses at Ichamur and the price was higher at the time.

I'm still looking into it. I don't think prices are greater/lesser enough at different towns to make a player deep-six hauling iron ore and start horse trading instead, though.

Is there any dev or scripter out there who can shed more light on horse pricing?

[I dump a lot of steppe horses because I kill millions of steppe bandits. It's 90% of my game. I've got to turn as much a profit as possible.]

Are you sure nothing else changed? Maybe the first time you went to Ichamur, your Companion with Trade was injured or something similar.

Might it be something to do with your relation with the town? I've noticed lower prices in towns I'm friendly with, could simply be a coincidence though.

Actually that would've been an old source of food. In early M&B versions, there was a separate inventory slot for food. Putting a horse in it allowed you to kill the horse and recoved some meat from it.
