A hero to zero, or, Questions about heros

Hi. Just bought the game, I'm loving it.

I am having an issue with Marnid(That's his name right?) I can't figure out how to level up his weapon skills. He's gain five levels, and is level eleven right now. But he's sitting there with 50 unassigned weapon points. I don't see the little plus sign on his character page by the weapon proficiencies.

Secondly, I just found out there is another hero I can recruit, but I'm already a member of the Swabians, is it possible to still get him?

Lastly, this is slightly unrelated, but I keep reading about people who get a shield in the arena matches with their lance, and long sword... I don't.

Hey there.

1. Weapon Mastery(?) skill limits the maximum value of a weapon proficiency to increase by assigning points. Either you will make him use specific types of weapons and proficiencies will go higher themselves (slowly) or you must increase his weapon mastery. By the way, I may be confusing the skill's name since I haven't played M&B for ages, but you'll see what skill I mean when you open up his character sheet.

3. I am not sure but it must be random, keep trying. Also, it is possible that the equipment you get may differ in Vanilla and other mods (most of the mods use Janus' Arena expansion).

I think I almost hit myself... Weapon Mastery! It was right there. 

I got the second fellow now. It seemed I could sneak in.

Also... I saw the arena expansion mod, like 1.6 I think. I downloaded it to try, but I get an error message about a beard file(?) So right now I'm just playing the game vanilla.

I think you might be playing the wrong version - check which one it's for, probably 0.751 or 0.808, I don't know at the mo'.
