A few questions from a new player

Greetings all,

I was directed to this game today from someone I played an MMORPG with. At first I even thought this was an MMORPG judging by the scope of the game at times (Dont worry. I wont ask for multiplayer. I know how hard such a feature is to add, and that such a feature needs to be added/removed VERY early on in development  ).

I'm pleased to say this game is very very appealing and the combat system REALLY stands out to me. Simple yet more effective than most CRPG battle systems. Before I finally decide whether or not to buy it, I have a few questions, mostly regarding Just how "Grand" this game is....

I mean, I know I can join factions and such, but I was wondering how many joinable factions there are and how high you can rise. Examples:

Can you join an "evil" faction of pirates, brigands, or raiders?

Can you rise in the faction to a VERY high level? Example if I join a nobleman's army, can I rise from a footsoldier to a squire to knight to being given a title of heridty (hence becoming a nobleman)?

I see you can you lead armies... however I was wondering if through battle you gain land and reap the rewards of that land (have serfs work the land and generate goods and money for you to trade)

And if you can gain land and such, can you also lay siege to and conquer cities that you rule and own over?

Finally... for such an open game... is there a central storyline to complete? IE some scourge you need to remove and even after thats over you have opposing factions/noble houses/armies to battle?

And graphically... are there plans to add more improved lighting/shadow effects to the game? The only thing that stood out to me while walking around the starting city is that there seemed to be no shadows from the buildings and few lighting effects

Finally... if you don't want to answer all those questions, could you at least tell me what your favorite feature of the game is so I can know what to expect to love about this?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

As you probably know the game is not finnished yet. So I would advise trying out the mods to get a more complete feeling.
You should do some searchs and read the stickies in the suggestinos forums if you want to find out about previous discussions on a wide range of topic,s and feel free to bring back an old topic.

You cannot join 'evil' factions in vanilla yet.
You can rise to a high level but there is no in-game recognition really of rank.
You cannot gain land and serfs yet.
Sieges (the act of starving a city out) probably won't be implemented, assaults on forts + etc might be.
There probably will be graphical changes, Armagan seems to want to get the less + non asthetic stuff done first.

THe horses are teh pwn.

1st, you cannot gain anything as far as: Land, serfs, replenishable/tradable items.
However, check out the
Mods
foe this game. There are some VERY talented Modders adding somem exceptional content to this game.
Seiges are mpt in the game ....Yet!
We all hhave hopes.
Right now, It is a Midievel combat game of exceptional quality..Oh, yeah..it's still beta too!
Just enjoy killing,( and getting killed) for now. Try concentrating on one type of unit for your army, for now.
It's noce to have: Archers; Knnights/Guards/ blah,blah..in your army, but having only one type, haelps you learn how to control, and fight with that kind of troop.
%
#1 rule is; NO mounted troops in the water
#2 rule is: if you're not sure, have everyone dismount at the start of battle!
The : hold this position" command, shoukld be the first button you press in ANY fight.

in the vanilla version, no. you can only join vaegir or swadian. however, try getting the mag7 mod(only compatiable with v .704 i think) , which adds a bandit faction. or get the sea raider mod to join a sea raider faction.

you can rise in level, but in vanilla M&B it dosent really acheive much, in some mods, however, there are rewards for rising in the ranks.

not as yet no. someone was working on a mod that included a castle that you could own and customize, but i dont know if it ever got done.

not yet, no.

there IS a storymod, but in the vanilla, being in a beta stage, there is no real storyline. some mods include opposing heroes/party leaders

hope that answers a few questions.
as for favorite features...there are so many. if you ever get bored of the game try one of the larger mods (like LOTR or 100yrs war) .

EDIT: was beaten to most answers while i was typing :???:

Welcome to the forums Vistaer!!! We all love M&B for our own reasons i suppose, but the feature that stands out the most if the combat system. No matter how grand this game gets, the combat will always be its core and backbone. Most of the ideas you mentioned are not in the game yet, but are in the works. As it stands right now in its early beta form, you can sample the combat system, build an army of your own design, choose from two factions (evil faction will almost certainly be added, and if not there are many mods that do/will add them), or play a peaceful merchant. My advice, BUY THE GAME. I've had more fun and put more hours into this game (more than i'd care to mention) than i have with other $60 titles. The old saying "you get what you pay for" does NOT apply to video games, especially this one. Heck, i have never before advertised a game to people i don't even know in person, but when playing other games online, i usually bring this one up and suggest to the dozens of other players in the server that they try M&B. So go view the mod forums and see just how much content has been added by the community alone, all before the full version is even released! Goodluck, go buy it, and hope to see you around!

Edit: Wow...3 people posted while i was writing this.

Another thing to note is that the game is incomplete at the moment, but if you buy it now for $14, or whatever the cost is, you will not have to pay for the full version when it is done. For all we know, the things you are asking about may be in the final version. I'm quite optimistic that at least a few of those will. It's not a bad idea to grab it now for $14, and probably get some of that stuff, and more, once the full version is avaliable.

Just to add my own praise - the price recently went up from $11 to $14 - and Armagan will continue to increase it as it gets closer to release.

I tried the game, got to level 6 and promptly paid my $14 for TWO license strings. Hands down the BEST $$ I have spent on ANY electronic (PC or video) game EVER. I have gotten my $14 out of it several times over already and I have only been playing for about a month (and mostly vanilla).

The module system is wonderful - and there are already great mods out there. I've started mucking around with the mod system myself just to try out a few ideas.

Which brings me to your second question - besides the combat system, the thing I like the most is the mod system. The things you asked about.. well if you are so inclined, buy the licenses and play around with it. Try and add some of the things you would like to see the game have (or just wait for someone else to do it - there has been some progress in the last several days on a sort of "siege" mod. there is lots if interesting stuff in the mods area - enough for HOURS and HOURS of playability - not to mention you can add your own stuff if you get bored of everyone elses *grin*)

Bottom line, BEST $14 I have ever spent on a game. PERIOD

just my 2 denars
