Hello everyone,
I just tried M&B last night and I bought it about 2 hours later. In many ways the game is superb. If the engine/gameplay were used in a skill-based mmorpg, then I would be playing 5 hours a day easily. There are a few things that really frustrate me though.
The main issue imo is that while you die quite easily after sustaining a heavy blow, the enemy seems to be able to take more dmg easily. I was playing on "normal" and switched it to 1/2 dmg and I didn't see a big difference. Its kinda crap when my arrows hit for 20 and they hit me for 30-60.
Really, it seems like the enemy npcs have an unfair advantage. If one of them can shoot me off my horse, then I should be able to make a pass with a sabre and kill 1 or maybe even 2 footmen.
It goes deeper than just simple stats though. When I'm fighting in the arena or with troops out in the open, the enemy uses intelligent tactics to wipe my side out, while my men stumble around like idiots (even footmen and men at arms).
Several times in the arena a mounted 2h knight would pass with a mounted archer right behind him to finish me off. However, my side always just runs around the edges and rarely try to protect me or form a strategy. More often than not my two partners get wiped out fast and I'm left with 2-3 enemies to take out.
Its not like the AI is crap, its just that the guys on my side all seem to have mental retardation, while the enemy is well-organized.
I have a couple of suggestions that might greatly improve gameplay(first, make it multi-player so we can fight in intelligent teams hehe plz?).
First, I'd like to be able to order my men to form up in some basic positions. I don't like when I have to order my lone horsemen to stay and not charge into a group of 15 footmen. Then he comes back and promptly sets his back to the oncoming arrows. Suicidal freak.
Second, plz plz plz include some type of moral. There is nothing realistic about 2 lone scumbags fighting to the death. Losing a valued unit because the enemy never shows fear and my units are dumb really pisses me off. Also, its annoying when Im on top of an archer mounted and he fires his magic 60 dmg arrow into my eye.
Next, please use more realistic physics when it comes to momentum. A loose line of 4-5 men should NOT stop a full horse charge unless they use polearms to impale the horse. I don't know how many times i've run into a weak line and had my horse just rear up causing me to be completely vulnerable to all of those blades (I have never failed to die in that situation).
The ability to crouch would be nice.
Ohh, and it would be cool to have ambush situations where either you or the enemy have a chance to set up archers, choke points, spear walls, etc. to take out a more powerful enemy. You might use some of the skills that I've seen people here disregard in order to increase the chance of an ambush. Of course, this would require that you could control your men a little better than is currently possible.
Anyway, I obviously support the game. Its really amazing that M&B was developed by only two people, and I'm sure you guys have many plans for the future of the game.
