A collection of bad ideas.

Having recently become addicted to this game and playing it frequently for the past week or so, I've come up with a few wild and probably impossible ideas to consider for implementation which I will try to keep short.

1. The ability to create your own group of knights, bandits, warrior lodge, etc. I enjoy having an army of 28 Swadian knights. What would be more enjoyable is naming and creating my own band of knights. "The swords of the west" or something.

It's probably a huge task to consider implementing, but is it at all possible to allow the player to create and name their own faction and perhaps even have your actions generate a 'reputation' towards your group of knights/warriors/bandits and treat you in different ways depending upon how your group has behaved?

This would also give the possibility of creating quests for your own group with multiple ways of completing them to determine how you will be viewed by the world. Even if just standard 'good' or 'evil' options.

Another possibility is giving the player the ability to claim their own area of land on the world map and begin building the new headquarters for their group. Perhaps even beginning construction of your own town? You could start small, with building your own castle and perhaps a farmer or two. Quests and the way your group is perceived will determine how many and what type of people may travel to your town to live. If you make enemies, they may launch an attack against your town or begin raiding your caravans.

You could play the corrupt noble and use all the land's money to build a bigger castle and tax your people into poverty, or try to encourage growth. You could also set up a recruitment or training area in your town to encourage people to try to join your merry band of do-gooders or evil types. Again, depending upon how you behave and treat your townspeople and the world in general, you may find heroes popping up in your town wanting to join you.

Having your own town to run and possibly even a castle is no small thing to add into a game. But I think it's worth considering. Maybe even siege warfare defending your castle...

2. Customised banners and standards. Even if the above suggestion isn't implemented, giving players the ability to create and carry their own standards and banners would add something special to the game. You could have one member of your party carry your personal standard, and have banners attached to your lance (or other weapons, although it doesn't really work as well).

You could either have a selection of pre-made banners for players to choose from or design a system that would allow people to create their own banner symbol and colours. If anybody has played Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, you should know what I'm suggesting. That game had an excellent system for customising your army's symbol and colours.

3. Cannibalism. I'm serious. We don't need to have gruesome animations of your party tearing the flesh off still-living prisoners with their teeth (although I wouldn't complain if that was included), but if we can put a horse into our food slot to avoid starving, would it be possible to implement the ability to put a prisoner in there as well? Or even a party member.

Again, your actions could effect your reputation/the way people view your party and cannibalism would likely have you shunned by many but perhaps cause fear into certain enemies and make them think twice about attacking you. It would be fun to play an evil party who not only raids, loots and kills, but also eats the prisoners as well.

4. Evaluating the combat maps again. During combat, lately, I've noticed it seems EVERY map I'm on requires my party or the enemy to have to travel through a river or over a mountain, etc. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think it's wonderful how terrain effects combat and it makes certain battles more interesting, but it seems this happens almost every battle. Am I the only one who noticed this? Perhaps I'm just unlucky, or perhaps the terrain for battles gets more difficult as you reach higher levels. The occasional map with a flat area to battle upon would be appreciated.

5. More intelligent AI. Especially with locating the enemy. Having terrain block line of sight is all well and good, but it offers no real tactical advantage either way if you have a party. I considered attempting to ride to the top of a hill to view the map and locate the enemy one time, but realised it's pointless because the enemy always knows where you are and rides straight for you, and you can immediately find where the enemy is by simply looking where your party members are heading. Is it possible to include line of sight for the AI so they have to see each other first? It would offer more possibilities in combat.

I have a few other ideas, but this is already getting too long so I will just add a few small ones.

-I would like to be able to recruit and train dark knights to join my party. I would enjoy playing a band of evil knights.

-This has been suggested before, but it's worth mentioning again, can we have more powerful prisoners sold for a higher cost? A dark knight prisoner should be worth much more than a river pirate slave.

- More quests, more scenery and movement on the maps. Perhaps even faster travel speed in general (it can feel slow when riding from place to place frequently), etc.

Great game. Thanks for reading, if you did. I had a few more ideas but will stop rambling for now. Anyone else think any of these ideas are worth exploring?

I like the ideas for customizing your own banner and such. What I also really wish for is that mixing troop types would become more useful, so that you can have your archers fire off at the incoming enemy and THEN charge with your cavalry. I have no idea how to implement this in a good way though. The way I see it, the AI and/or troop commands would have to be greatly improved and the battle size much larger. Perhaps also a small tactical map before a battle (maybe depending on your tactical skill) where you can chose which units to bring into battle and what their initial movements should be (i.e. archer blokes go camp on the hill, footmen with spears protect them and cavalry hide behind the hill until I tell you to charge).

Edit: Troop commands could perhaps work like the shopping system in Countrstrike; with hierarchies for first troop type then command. "1 - 3" would make your footmen charge etc.

Cannibalism sounds like a good idea. It goes along the idea of having to kill and eat your pet in Nethack to save yourself.

And there should only be negative repurcussions for eating people if you're seen doing so. If you have 5 people with you and you eat them all, they're not gonna be talking.

A lot of this would be very good - even cannibalism if handled correctly (it could give a very big morale penalty to your own party, perhaps :P).

And regarding the commands, that's been addressed in detail here, Rogge:

Additional AI Commands

Personally i'd first like to see them patch it up to 1.0 with the original plan and then start thinking of new stuff.

I'm beginning to get worried that all these new ideas have slowed down progress. Maybe they are overwhelmed by it all :).

I hope all this havent stalled the development altogether.

I think they are hiding. heh. Probably getting some restraining orders against their "fans" and planning to move far, far away.

Seriously, theyve got enough suggestions for another 10 year development cycle, its kinda funny.

they really oughta hire some professional help. some of the suggestions, like equipment changes for factions and such can be done by the mod tool, but the real meat and potatoes would still need to be coded, and theres still lots to be done.

I'd like to be able to coerce captured slaves into joining my group. It wasn't uncommon in
Mediaeval times for individuals and even whole armies to swap allegences.

It could be based on chance and go something like this:

If I've captured a dark knight I have the option of selling him into slavery or asking him to join me. If I choose to ask him to join me I give him an ultimatum "Pledge allegance to me or be put to death."

The game randomly generates whether he agrees or not. If he says no, he dies so I don't get paid for him as a slave. If he says yes, he joins me.

To balance the game out the chances of him agreeing would be low and perhaps the captive would loose a level or two if he was added to my party.

Also if different captives had different values than you would have to decide if gambling on a knight joining you or not was worth it, given you may lose a substantial bounty.

Sort of like what happens with Borcha. I'd rather see the decision based on average party longevity, your reputation, and your standing with the prisoner's faction. If you wanted to get really complex, you could even make certain factions more craven than others.

Something else I wouldn't mind seeing is more death animations added to the game. When I charge at someone with my spirited war charger aiming a couched lance at their head, I expect and would like to see their head explode or pop off and roll on the ground for awhile from the force of the impact. If a hit lands a lot of damage, perhaps even decapitations could be added. And cannibalism.

Of course, it depends on how gory people want this game to be. But doesn't it feel weird when you ride past and slash at someone for 100+ damage and they just fall over rather than losing a limb?

Building your own band of brothers and creating mini-faction sounds nice. I think such things should be implemented within some strict framework, though. Meaning- you shouldnt be able to get such option unless you`ve joined one of the kings` and gotten high enough rank to be rewarded with one city-willage of your choosing. From then on, you`re landlord. Perhaps having a willage means that it`ll generate specific landlord quests.

Well, if you got 50-60 good fighters (propably Hired Blades, or maybe knights of the "other" faction/some independent, not yet implemented nation) you could just go to a far out of the way town in Swadia or Vaegir and kick the ruling noble out of it - who is going to stop you? Vaegir/Swadia? They have enough problems as is, without sending a large warparty to some unimportant part of their kingdom... especially knowing your reputation and having reports of what you did to all those dark kights, khergits, bandits, deserters of their own army and whoever else stood in your way... they will rather try to solve it diplomatically, making sure that you don't attack them... or they will after they lost 200+ men which they really would've needed in their war

I meant creating your own faction, but being rewarding for serving the Swadians/Vaegir for a long period of time or just exceptionally well by being given one of the towns (perhaps of your choice) to rule would be an interesting idea as well. It would add an added responsibility and more quest opportunities.

Or perhaps you could create a sub faction while still serving the Vaegir or Swadians.
