A balanced meal

This is just an idea that's been kicking around my head for awhile now; disregard it if you like. But it seems to me that your troops would get pretty sick of eating only one type of food for days on end. Like...say you're feeding them dried meat. Maybe it's tastier than anything else on the menu, but no one had ever heard of the Atkins diet in the Middle Ages. You'd want some bread with that! And how about something to wash it down? A nice mug of beer sounds great. So I was thinking...how about instead of one food slot, you have 3? As long as 1 out of the three are full with some kind of food, your men will survive, but for morale to really improve, you need to provide a meal with all the components, both food and drink. The ideal meal, I suppose, would consist of dried meat, grain and ale...eh, maybe wine if you're Swadians. I dunno. But the Vaegirs definitely strike me as beer drinkers.

It sounds to me, that you're not being suspended by a suspension of disbelief.

I don't think there really is a point to this besides making it somewhat more realistic.

Can anyone tell me the purpose of different kinds of food? Why should I buy dried meat when fish is cheaper?

I don't know really... Heard meat gave better morale, but I haven't noticed anything. And grain is the cheapest food here is (though the fish are lighter).

But what does morale do?

"When I'm all dirtied up after a long day of battling the Sea Raiders, I want to kick back with my knights. Relax and tell stories by the fire while we tally up the loot. Then, just then, there is nothing like a good Praven Ale."

"Praven Ale, the ale favoured by warriors."

66 of 112 warriors chose Praven Ale in a blindtest.

66?! Bah, it was 110, Vaegir prick! Anyway, great idea, although if you look at what sailors have eaten until very recently (rotten meat and hardtack, in many cases), you'd probably consider the options already in the game a bit more realistic. I must note, also, that the Swadians seem like the ale-types, with the Vaegirs as winos. I'm a liquor fan, myself :D

I'm not quite sure you can call the case of sailors applicable. A ship was, by its very nature, out at sea, and as such unable to regularly restock with fresh food. At the start of a voyage, I'm sure the food was much better, before they had to scrape the bottom of the barrels in storage. A land force, on the other hand, is able to forage. There are animals for meat, farms for eggs and such. Not to mention, there's always a city within a half day's ride. They can get the good stuff. The only problem is carrying it.

As for the Vaegirs as wine drinkers...nuh uh. Okay, maybe they enjoy their wine in Wercheg, but the Swadians are the more spit and polish civilization. Wine is for the "cultured". Pass it off on the Swadians. But some sort of hard liquor in the game would be cool.

Food and drink slots...2-3 food slots and about 2 drink slots...whatever you put in the slots will be consumed at a constant rate...that is, having only 1 item in a slot, the item will be consumed just as fast as if you had all slots filled...

Upside is better morale gain...downside, you need a lot more food in your inventory, which would make inv management a more useful skill...

Food variety should also give a small bonus...better morale gain if there's a variety of food given to troops rather than 3 x portion of just meat...

And perhaps add a cooking skill :p the higher the skill, the more exotic food you can buy from the merchants.

But I largely agree, there is nothing more sickening than eating dried meat for 100 days.

Good point. I'm just assuming that the general quality of the food you'd be buying in the first place for a large contingent of men (at least lower-end troops) wouldn't be all that high. If we're assuming that you're actually trying to cook gourmet (or even decent/not-just-bare-bones-survival) meals for all of your men, then sure, you're well within a reasonable distance to obtain the stuff, I just don't think that model is terribly realistic.

Wine is for pseudo-sophisticates. Beer is universal. Liquor is for the truly discerning sort. Swadia seems more likely to have liquor ;)
