The 87e was formed from the "Dillon" Regiment of French Line Infantry. The Dillon regiment was part of the Irish Brigade. This was a brigade of Irish Rebels and Exiles that joined the French during the Williamite wars in Ireland. In return, the french sent 30000 more experienced Line Infantry to Ireland. The men swore their loyalty to the King of France, but when the King was overthrown they stayed loyal to France to spite the English Crown that had sent them from their homeland. They became the 87e, and fought in many engagements over the years, earning themselves many distinguishments and Napoleon's personal thanks, Which was given to all former Irish Brigade Regiments.
