My mother found his name and regiment and I used that info to find his military service records as well as finding the journal of his brother Philip. Well my grandparents found the journal . I found his service record though

None of my long gone family members joined the military. Quite dull... But when we're one of the best glassblowers back in the days! Producing glass for the kings and stuff

And still are very appreciated. Because I am connected to the Czech Goebel-family who still own glass companies

I found records of someone with the exact name who lived in 1711
http://www.genealogieonline.nl/stamboom-de-roo-bijnen/I2428.php
, also ive found that some soldiers with the same last name who fought in the first world war.

Also when you translate my last name in english it is graveyard which meanes my forefathers lived near or on a graveyard in the middle ages because you were given your name how you looked, what you did or where you lived.

Remember that Kerckhof is a very common name.

In fact, the 'oldest' guy we found with our family name (born in 1693) was married to someone named Kerkhof.

Actually it isen't at least not in belgium it is more common to have "Van de Kerckhove" or something like that. and thats nice :p

Spelling (and van de) was much less cared for in those days. In fact, Shakespeare had multiple ways to write his name.

Names (and spelling) didn't became more 'stuck' until Napoleon arrived. I think. My knowledge about names isn't all that great.

Your're right, its also because of Napoleon that the dutch have "weird" last names.

Like naaktgeboren etc? They existed long before Napoleon did.

I guess it's just Dutch humour.

Nope, when Napoleon was emperor he wanted that everyone had a last name that was registerd, the dutch thought were are going to mock him by choosing funny names but when Napoleon was overthrown they still used the register Napoleon made and they got stuck with it.

But the names existed before the French wrote everything down.

Trust me, there's been quite the research done on these names.

Yes but not all dutch people had names like that , some of them had strange names before napoleon but others changed it because of that.

It's different down here. Colder for some reason. I'm currently living close to Wageningen.

The climate difference between the north and the south of the NL is barely noticable.

I live near Den Bosch.

You can totally feel it. In Friesland you have the warm current of the North Sea.
Here it's cold. No discussion
