Making  enough money has always been tough in the SOD series. I hate cheats (Cntrl-x) so I wanted to find out how other people make enough money to stay in the black (positive), with their finances. Have to admit that I have changed the Tourney betting in the past and am thinking about doing it again -I know it's still sorta cheating, but at least playing on full damage, you can risk and lose it all.

So far, I always take a blunt damage weapon with me to take as many prisoners as possible, that rakes me some coin but I'm still always short when it's time to pay my troops and I think they hate me.

Please post any good tips here

Selling slaves is always good. Oh but...I can't find the SODDING SLAVERS!!!  (someone find a fix, please!)

sorry for the rant....a good tip at the beginning is to head for  Khudan and buy all the furs there, as they are usually priced at 50 and can be sold at lots of places for 300+ each. It replenishes after a while so I always check if I'm in the neighbourhood.

And hanging around Tihr and bashing sea raiders with blunt objects is good to, as Ramun the slave trader is always at Tihr.(sea raiders=50each, I think).
This is a good strategy as it levels you up as well as raking in loot to sell or equip your companions with.(but you need Slavers for this!!!grumble)

I always keep a slaver army, and take it out for a run when I need to raise some cash. Obviously save your blunt-weapon guys for slaving, don't waste them in sieges and such

Paying your troops isn't really that important at the start of the game.

In my game I just let my debt build up a bit and took a castle and a town... now I'm making a profit.

Or if you hate the Control X xheat just go into camp, take other actions, quick start, and then 10,000 Denars hehe. Nah I'm just messing with you, best thing to do, I find is to take some fiefs, make peace with all other factions, and then commence building up the fief's economy.

at the start of the game:
use garrisoning to allow u to reduce ur party size so u can catch any bandit parties, sea raiders give profitable loot
winning tournaments and selling slaves is pretty good too.
Every time you are in a village, check to see if they are selling any trade goods cheap.

Yes Tourneys are very good when you first start, I built me a small fortune winthin the first 2 months game time of around 50,000 Denars from Tourneys

How about trading in general? Is it worth it to build a trading heavy character?

I tried to, but it seems that I spend/waste quite some time assessing the market, and then it often tells me to go to the other end of the world.
Is it only in the beginning that it seems too much hassle, or can it pay off later if you get a ton of money and a lot of bag space? (can you only increase bag space with the character skill or can you also buy mules/carts etc?)

Are there other general goods tips like the one above, that I should be aware off? Like "always buy velvet in X and then go to Y" etc. etc.

PS: I dont know if this is SoD specific, but yesterday when I played it for the first time, the market assessing only mentioned goods that actually were not accessible in that particular town. Verified it 4 times in a row, and never got an advice that I could actually follow through with.

Using "check for prices" or how is it called option is indeed useless but trade itself is very profitable. Each town produces 1 pre defined resource and it sells it really cheap, the longer the distance from this town the more expensive this is to sell somewhere else. I find fur trade to be most profitable and the tip with visiting villages is really good too, I always try to drop by. Just learn the normal price of each good and if you see it much lower buy and sell even in nearest town.

gather 50-100 men burn ALL enemy villages  PROFIT and the scenery of whole nord land burning is awesome ^^

Regarding trade, high trade skill makes a BIG difference on your profit (also for selling loot). Try to have an NPC merchant in your party and pump his charisma and trade, unless you decide to have high trade yourself. Either way it is worth putting at least 2 (or 5) points in trade since it adds +1 (+2) to the party skill. Make sure your NPC is not red when you go into town to sell/buy things or his skill will not count.

Regarding wages, if you engaged in trade and traveling to tournaments, garrison your elite troops. Garrisoned troops cost half the price and the higher tier ones are more expensive. If they do not fight, they better stay at home. Get rid of the mercenaries when you can, they are very expensive for their levels. Hire them to get a certain job done and then get them killed in battle or just dismiss them. It is good idea if you decide to form a regiment (e.g. for siege), to fill it with the troops you want dead - the surgery skill does not affect them. Keep the hard-to-replace faith and noble troops in your party.

I found a good link to a trade guide.

Assuming that nothing has been changed trade wise in SoD, this should still be usable, right?

Yes that is usable and as far as I know, trade is still a valid option.  However, I have noticed that trade is not nearly as profitable as conquest.  It is very useful early on, and I always stop by a villiage if I am close and buy something cheap to sell it later, but killing enemies and looting the bodies is still the best way to make profit next to taxes.  As king, taxes are your greatest source of income, so go out and capture some settlements!

In V4.5 Gold, the Boar Clan has nice gear that is just as profitable as sea raiders on the other side of the map.  Also, learn where the Slavers Guild is located (in every faction now) so you can sell prisoners easily.

It is good to know that we can sell slaves to the Slavers as well, it was sometimes annoying hauling around prisoners looking for a random slave trader in a tavern.
Are the Slavers supposed to be in the capitals of each faction? if so what are the capitals?
I think it is a confirmed bug though, so I guess a patch will have to be wished for

The capitol cities are the cities the native kings own.  You can get this information in the lords menu (native feature).  The strategy advisor also gives this information out as well (read merc guilds - slavers) but unfortunately the version was released before I got to send the dialog (was watching superbowl).  It will be fixed very soon though then you guys will love the strategy advisor.

Much appreciated, I spent a good half hour earlier this week looking for a post like this

I keep bouncing from Tournament to Tournament and raiding villages/caravans. My denars are always 10,000+ easily.
Also been investing time into making my fiefs very profitable.

The prices of slaves needs to be increased.

I get about 120 denars for knights, I think average troops should be more around 100-125 and elite units like knights 250.

That way you can make a small fortune from prisoners. If I capture 20 prisoners after a big battle I get around 1,500 denars, and I usually only get that many from battles with like 200.
