This will be fun. Back in 1859 it stopped quite a lot of telegraphs, it will be fun looking for that year.

Difference with the telegraph as opposed to the web though is the telegraph isn't smart enough to re-route if one of it's points are down.

Hmm. I like your thinking there's just one catch. If the solar flare is strong enough as you say to knock out the route it's taking that it has to re-route. Why oh why would the re-routing path be magically saved?

Well, **** hit the fan around here back in 2003 when we had the Northeast Blackout. When 55 Million people got cut off from power you can imagine the amount of idiots that ran amok and looted. I can only imagine what the idiots would do if a worldwide event broke out. So no it's not the Sol that will kill Civilization. I think the media's more focused on the masses to tear it apart.
