I've worked on the Scotland 1269 mod which has a fair amount of heraldry, names, conversion done - Mainly its a text based and POCcolor conversion, but you're welcome to use any or all of it for Scotland, and I'd be happy to help where I can. But the attempt I've made so far has shown me the limitations of what I can do, and the size of task that's needed to make a comprehensive mod work. I'm still working on it but really lack the detailed modding skills to get a map in place, even with the modding kit release - what I would say is that doing all of Europe in the detail that's required is a massive thing! The world map seems about the right size for Scotland, never mind the whole of Western Europe, so good luck. And, absolutely, don't do it alone!

Well done on this list on Scotland so far - A lot of this is really accurate, I think, but bits are from later period. Its confusing as the sources of the time are poor in any case.

My bad regarding the work you'd done on the Hebrides of Scotland, as they're in the list for Norway. They seem to be good. Comments on your list in bold below.

For those following the mod progress rest assured that we are hard at work:

1. We have been scrutinizing our old features and thinking of new ones: trying to set up core features that preserve historical accuracy but are feasible to implement and will improve the players experience.

2. We have been hard at work creating a database with banners, names, holdings, titles, alliances, etc. organized by region realm and household.

3. We have been working on drafting 3d armor models and have begun the long process of painstakingly recreating historical armors and weapons.

4. We have a scener who has started to experiment making some scenes.


We still need Programmers, 3d Modellers, Sceners, and Researchers!
 
I always thought that the lance system was more of a 14th century thing? You should read about Geoffrey de Villahouin in his bio of the 4th crusade and the Latin Empire. He describes the Brabantians as wearing a heavy amount of armour. Also, where do you get your information about Scandinavians? Norwegians, Danish, and Swedes are pretty different from each other. I can tell that there might be some influence from the King's Mirror. Too bad you don't want to extend to the East, because there is a lot going on with the Latin Empire, Bulgarians, the Byzantine Successor States, Khwarazmians, the Seljuks, and then a Mongol army arrival.
 
What exactly do you mean by "The Kings Mirror". In terms of Scandinavians I would be very interested to see any notable differences in terms of troops. Danish and Norwegian are very similar langauges too and even Sweden shares many of the same words. All three countries had similar systems of government in which land was more in the hands of the church and freeholder farmers rather than feudal nobles. Additionally they intermarried their ruling classes and had frequent contact with eachother. In relation to Brabancons According to Walter Map from 1180 "The fighters of these rotten were protected from head to foot by a leather jerkin, and were armed with steel, staves and iron." As far as the east that is really beyond the scope of our project unfortunately. We are more focused on getting into detail. In terms of the lance system I think its still a good way to manage recruitment in a way that more accurately reflects feudalism. In fact it could be argued that the Lance system makes more sense to be in the 13th century at the height of feudalism. The whole idea of feudalism is based on vassalage: on a basic level Kings would have tenants in chief, these would have Knights, knights would have squires and common troops levied into their command. Of course Kings would also have knights and both kings and tenants in chief would hold manors in demense.
 
There is a mid-13th century written dialogue of a conversation between a King and his Prince son in Norway, "The King's Mirror". The Swedes are basically a Viking society until the Birger Jarl reforms in the later half of the 13th century. The Norwegians exited out of a civil war that got a lot of their aristocracy killed, and the King's Hird system is pretty different- including "The Guests", "Candle Men", and the "Table Men" for example. The Danes are probably the more modernized of the two Scandinavians, and would resemble a bit closer to a Central European society.

I wouldn't focus too hard on a broad "Feudalist" system, because different regions do things rather differently in different eras. I would suggest making different cultural groups have their own style of government system. The Almohads and Scandinavians are very different from an Anglo-French system. HRE is also a tad different as well due to the election of an emperor. I would focus more on what the different systems look like during the early 13th century. The 14th century was a total upset after the 13th century due to the Bubonic Plague- a lot of peasants weren't tied to their land anymore, and were able to export their labor services, this included a gradual increase of mercenaries as well which was normally shunned in the 13th century.

From my own broad interpretation of Medieval European armies that I see a common pattern, I would suggest 4 main categories of troops:

Archers being professional commoner soldiers notably trained for specialization in bows and crossbows (good armour, good melee, good ranged). Splits between Longbows (or Recurved bows) and Crossbowmen in the troop tree.

Sergeants for personal retinue of Lords and Knights, and are essentially militant serfs (decent armour, decent melee, decent horseback, decent ranged). Splits between Polearm on Foot (with or without shield), Cavalry, and Crossbowmen (or uses bows) in the troop tree.

Militia are the Medieval equivalent of Greek city-state Hoplites. They are tradesmen who trains for war on the side, and help police their towns and cities (decent armour, decent melee, decent ranged). Splits between Polearm on Foot (with or without shield), and Crossbowmen (or uses bows) in the troop tree.

Knights being straightforward of Page to Squire to Knight. They can also be personal retainers of a Lord, but are aristocrats of their own right (excellent armour, good melee, good horseback). They are primarily a cavalry role, but can make good foot infantry. Pages would probably resemble foot soldiers.

1. Ah yes I remember that's where I read the stuff about the candle holders. Essentially it was a similar system to western European households which would have chancellors, marshals, etc. the roles simply went by different names and had slightly different functions. It was sort of an evolution from tribalism to feudalism. As for the Danes yeah its true they are more western European because they live near Germany.

2. As far as the feudalistic recruitment goes, most of our map is feudal or quasi feudal.

3. For your interpretation of the armies you're not wrong but our troop trees pretty much stick to that format for the most part.
