100% Processing Power in Use When Idling

I've had this issue probably 4 or 5 times in the past 2 years with my computer. I'll start it up one day and the task manager will show its using 100% of its power. The fans are going at full power and of course it runs appallingly slow.

So, I attempt to do a virus check but it usually just hangs up. Same with the system restore. Some times it just... goes away, and I still have no explanation as to why. It seems highly unoriginal as a virus, to me. Any ideas? Has anyone else had this before?

I figured I'd ask here because you aren't a bunch of patronizing jerks.

Haven't you ever tried sorting by processor usage in the task manager to figure out what is using it up?

Ah, forgot to add that. As is typical, it won't list anything above 5-20%. Whatever is making it run so hot is keeping itself a secret.

... wut? Something is wrong with your task manager then.

You just said it wont list anything higher than 20%, period. That's not right.

Eh, maybe I said it wrong. Right now, it lists all the processes as it normally would - a bit of %age here and there, but nothing that would add up to 100. Thus, whatever is making my computer run so hot is hiding itself.

1 system restore later, and no difference.

That's the thing. I'm sorting by CPU, and the system process is only showing about 23. AVG anti viruses is showing about 12-20, and Explorer is showing another 20.

There's about 4 or 5 other 1-2% processes. Nothing that adds to 100.

This little tool has helped me greatly in the past, it can show you what is running and from where. Great for catching sneaky virus's that escape security programs. Perhaps it can help you, i'm not really sure, but thought it wouldn't hurt to post it.

Eh, it'll be quite hard to find a malicious program amidst all my extra processes :P. I'm going to stick with doing system restores as far back as I can go. Worst case, I lose my Ireland save game for Knights of Honor (:(), but most of my data is on my external hardrive, which I have disconnected.

No, but I count sixty percent already.

If it is a virus, system restore isn't going to help.

Like I've said, I've had the issue before which went away without a virus ever being found.

Quite natural, as I'm running a virus scan + was doing a system restore.

Here's the odd thing - I can clearly remember when this **** started. I wasn't even doing anything special - I left my computer idling for about an hour while downloading a patch, went back (patch still wasn't done, so rules that out) and tried running Knights of Honor - lagged like hell. Been at 100% ever since.

Edit: Arg, I'm at a lose. Restored to a point 3 days ago, no change. So, in other words, its a virus. I've rebooted in safe mode where it runs fine enough, but now AVG free will only let me run a huge full badass scan. Wouldn't be surprised if it took 2 days, and still doesn't find anything.

Rawr, how fun.

Or it could be Adobe reader or some other badly coded piece of ****e loading in when Windows starts and ****ing the system over.

I considered that too, to be honest. Thing is, I've never had this type of **** before, and there is a considerable performance hit - generally the system gets more and more clogged up, until it simply sits there and does nothing.

Anyway, running a huge check. Dear gods, scanning my Activision folder took the longest, now I'm already in the 'S'es for Program files. Doubtless it won't work. Virus scanning has never fixed a problem for me.

Arg: One virus check later, no improvement.

Edit: Looking at the CPU usage, the sum of the processes is pretty high. However, it doesn't add up to 99%, neither does it explain why exactly. The CPU usage fluctuates, though always staying in the 80's-90s. So I've checked for viruses, restored, unplugged all my peripherals, and still no magic.

Heh, its a tricky little application, though. Still, I'm doing the typical 'get rid of old files', then I'll try his method again.

Backup your important stuff and reinstall windows (full drive format and reinstall, not restore), stop wasting time looking for an invisible culprit. If indeed it's a virus or trojan or worm, you are very likely to not kick it out of your system effectively via antivirus programs and probably the damage it has done is too high to be repaired.

Task manager, enlarge, screencap, post. Block out username if you really feel the need. At 1200 vertical resolution, you should be able to fit 60-70 processes in, and you really shouldn't be running more than 40 anyway.
