So in one of my saves, I was vassal of Vlandia. After some time King Derthert has died of old age and after that, my clan became the ruling clan. My clan banner changed to his(lion) and his changed to a helmet with something in the background. I guess this isn't supposed to work like that. I wasn't using any mods.
