1.5.0 Beta Horse Archer formations worse than before

When I order my horse archers to charge they constantly run into enemy infantry formations and die needlessly. Before the update they avoided enemies just fine and now I need to micromanage them like it's warband all over again

Noticed this as well. Optimization should not come at the expense of playability.

Yeah, they're a bit goofy now. I find if you have them fallow me and then charge them when they're at the side of enemies they circle, but if I just charge they more forward too much before they circle and get in trouble. Sucks. Pretty much everything about the AI changes in 1.5 sucks. I'm glad they're trying to improve AI, but they didn't nail it this time.

I have been using the follow your sgt option for both melee and bow cav and it seems to work fairly well not amazing but they dont seem to rush blindly and kill themself either.

In 1.4.3, the F4 command made Horse Archers harass and avoid direct contact and F3 would make them fire a few volleys then charge in. Did this change in 1.5.0?

Are you ordering yours to charge with F3 or do you mean to say advance via F4?

If anyone has a video of previous horse archer behavior and the current, that would help.

I would do it but I have a truly potato laptop and it won't look good.

I don't capture video but I can confirm (still using 1.4.3) that horse cav via F4 will focus on horse archers or cav.

If the cav retreats into their own lines, the horse cav will not charge through the infantry and will instead keep their distance. I have to specifically use F3 to get them to engage. Not sure if Nvidia or Steam lets you capture footage without having to download something like Fraps but I can try to capture something tonight.

Thanks, really appreciate it.

Yup. I went up against some looters and they killed my Mameluke Heavy Cavalry. Say it to yourself out loud... Looters killed Mameluke Heavy Cavalry. I was mystified. It's just not something that should be able to happen. Unless the looters walked up on my Soldiers while they were sleeping, there's just no dimension in the multiverse where a looter can kill a Mameluke Heavy Cavalry... especially when that cav is supported by other melee infantry and foot archers. Definitely not improved. If I recall correctly they actually claimed that was something they fixed. Not sure how they define that though.

Was it because the cavalryman charged into a group of them, lost momentum, and was surrounded?

Trying to get a sense of whether or not that cavalryman charged outright when they shouldn't have...like why did they allow the infantry that close or vice versa? Do you use F1+F4 or did you use F1+F3? Need additional context because if it was the latter then I could feasibly see a heavy cav getting surrounded by 20 looters and getting knocked off his horse. If he was isolated then death is feasible also if he was really surrounded.

F1 + F3. I'm playing 1.5.0. I did F1 + F3 in 1.4.3 and looters never killed my Mamelukes. In 1.4.3 that combo made my HAs run circles around the enemy formation and avoid getting into melee. I lost HAs in 1.4.3 to other cav, but never to looters. So, they definitely tweaked something. If I used F1 + F4 they would charge forward and fire some arrows and then run back away from the threat... also avoiding melee. But I did not like that because they were not getting near as many kills using F1 + F4. Also as I mentioned.. in this particular battle I had infantry and foot archer support. The infantry were engaged with the looters in melee and an HA still got caught.
