Update 02/04/2020 I: Great news: Bug is confirmed and the fix is planned to be in the next patch.
Update 02/04/2020 II: Patch 1.0.3 tried to solve the problem. Ýou can load and play a corrupted save. If you save and load it still crashes though. Problem persists and needs another patch.

The problem (technical issue)

  • After 45 manual saves ("Save as...") with following loads, followed by another manual save, the 45th save game will be corrupted
Workaround/Quickfix

  • You can still play the game if you don't create new saves. Stick with the current save game/slot, overwrite it and you will be fine

The problem (original post)

Well, I heard about problems with save games (I found threads marked as "in progress" but they seem to relate to a released patch - so I got some sort of new problem here) and many people ranted about it but it never happened to me. Since today I'm also affected badly. I won't get into rage mode but I hope for a fast and successful fix.

So let me describe what happened:

  • Played about 150-200 days ingame
  • No problems with save games at all, game crash now and then, always recovered from this, loading saves without problems
  • I used a mix of manual, rotating saves and auto save...just to make sure I don't loose too much and always have multiple saves available
  • Today the game crashed and it keeps crashing when I load the latest manual save. The latest auto save is also corrupted.
  • When I load the previous save the game does not crash and I can play but as soon as I create another save game this is corrupted as well
  • So all in all I can't play the game without the risk of loosing all progress, so I had to stop playing campaign mode for now until this is fixed
If you ask me, fixing game crashes and the save game issue is most important now. I don't care about flying camels, it's funny but not game breaking - Me and many others can't play the game and that's a serious problem.

You will Be losing save games throughout early access. Tale Worlds mentioned this along side of the fact that there would be balancing issues, missing items and missing dialogue.

It looks like save games are not compatible with latest patch. So the entire play is useless. Zero progress. Maybe you need to start a new game after every patch. Not everybody has time to restart it

I had the same problem yesterday with my save that I had around the same amount of days on (before the first patch) which happened again after a few hours after wiping all my save files and starting a brand new campaign.

Same thing with my latest save and the auto save being corrupted, making the game crash when trying to load in.

P.S I did try to verify the files and everything.

Well, I expect my saves to be wiped out after some big changes, but not after two days for god sake.

They should at least allow our character level to be saved

NM:Mine loaded fine

Id rather them be wiped after 2 days than 50 days. Just sayin.
Your saves are going to be deleted many times, because new mechanics won't work with old saves. That is why I want at least, to enjoy the game in his different states for a "long time", not losing progress after 2 days.

They should at least allow our character level to be saved
Yeah, that would work too, the start is really slow and not fun at all, following bandits, or ""trading"". And with how grindy leveling up is... oof.

Of course they mentioned this. They need something to quote when things go wrong. But it's not a good strategy. If nobody can play long enough, no late game bugs are uncovered, no feedback is given, not all the game content is tested. So it's absolutely essential to have a save system which keeps your progress - at least parts of it like your army, relations, money, items, politics. I wouldn't care if a Lord vanishes in front of me or if a mission has to be repeated. That's an easy one, you can repeat it. But I won't repeat 24 IRL hours of pure grind just to recover from a patch.

THEY TOLD YOU. How much clearer could they be? You have to scroll past it to buy the game. I bet nobody read it which I understand because everyone’s excited but still you can’t blame anybody else for you buying something that’s working the way they said it would work.

I've had the same issue and this was before the first patch was even released.

-> cheats help with that. You can recreate your character on a new campaign and go from there.

See Nexus for [developer console] and [character exporter] mods

its not ideal, but at least you dont need to stop playing because you are afraid of losing progress all the time.

If i'm understanding this right it happens at the 45th time you load up a file.

You release as early access because you desperately want community feedback. That's why they decided to do so, otherwise it would have taken more years. Without working saves Taleworlds will loose a huge part of valuable feedback and players over time. Those who give up on singleplayer may never come back, give bad reviews or whatever.

Well, interesting. That would mean in fact I made it worse with my save file strategy. Thanks for sharing. I will try tomorrow if I can stick with save file no. 44 if I never ever again do a follow up save which then is loaded. I can somehow confirm this theory as it fits perfectly to the things I listed in my first post.

Yes they are, this is a different issue.

I want someone to post a youtube video of them saving and loading a game 45 times and having the save be corrupt. I want to see them perform the test multiple times too.

I have the exactly same issue. It happened at e1.0.1. Once you crashed during loading a game and it corrupted all related save except the one from e1.0.0. So weird.
Now it happened again on e1.0.2 version. Same problem. Both of them are related to auto save. But I don't know what goes wrong.
