(0632) Squad AI - flaws

1. Non-hero recruited NPCs follow commands, but heroes nearly always do not. This is a peculiar bug that only seems to affect the behaviour of heroes like Marnid and Borcha. (I know it's been posted many times, already.)

2. NPCs often crowd together when told to hold position. I've got a great screenshot of ~12 crossbowmen all huddled so close together that only 3 of them are able to fire their weapons. They really should know enough to spread out a bit.

3. NPCs often flee when I step in to assist, and then return when I back away. NPCs don't seem to like teamwork. Many times when a teammate is struggling against one or more hostile units I'll try to rush them from behind on foot to distract them a bit. I very often find myself getting attacked by all of them while my teammate runs away. What's worse is when I flee, my teammate then returns to take them on solo again. Seems to be a flaw in the AI logic.

Also, it would be useful to have an attack command in addition to (or instead of) the charge command. I can nearly never get my crossbowmen to use their ranged weapons in response to a charge order. They always seem to rush at the enemy with their blades. Usually, I just want them to advance to where they can continue shooting their crossbows.

the first part of your post is about something annoying, which I have noticed too.

the last part is do-able by using the hold this position command instead of the charge command to get your troops to advance and then fire. all you need do is advance yourself, pressing 1 whenever you think it is a good idea, and your troops will advance and then stop where you want them too.

Yes, and it seems to be a bug because it doesn't always happen and it doesn't happen with every type of NPC.

But I like to have my team advance on the enemy while I flank them, so I don't want them to move to my position. The only way it could work is if I could tell them to hold a position specified by my cursor. That way I might be able to move them to positions visible from where I'm located.
