February 27, 1021 February has always been the harshest winter month in Calradia, and not without reason. The severe cold and blizzards forced all living beings to hide deep from the weather. Local folk traditionally gathered around the hearth with a pint of heady beverage, sharing stories about the past or discussed more pressing matters. |
An old gray-haired warrior sat by the hearth, glancing at his chipped blade which gleamed in the flickering light. He could take hours, sulking, captivated by the memories of his past youth and glory, however he was snapped back by the voice of a young man who sat before him looking so intently at his jagged sword, imagining the adventures it has been through: - I wish I could go into battle," the youth adressed the elder, keeping his eyes on the sword, "So I could show what I am worth. If I were there, in the forest of Druimmore, or on the shores of Battania, I would show them the full strength of our swords! To the Battanians, to the Imperials, and especially to the Sturgians. The old man knew that look on the young man's face, knew that there was no point in trying to reason with the young blood, because he simply would not have listened anyway, just as he himself had dismissed all warnings when he was as young. But the tale of bygone days came out on its own: - Oscar, don't go looking for a battle, for you don't know exactly what you'll find in the end. Heed me, for that I know your struggle, for that I also went looking for a battle when I was young like you are, to seek glory for my name. But alas, 60 years ago, I found only emptiness and horror. It wasn't a battle, it wasn't a massacre! It was demonic chaos that ravaged everything in its path... |
The winter of 961 For the first time in many years, the winter was warm. But it wasn't simply a natural phenomenon. No! - It was the work of men. Cities, villages, meadows and forests were all set ablaze, melting the snow. The Khuzait hordes, led by Attola, wreaked havoc in their wake, sweeping through the Empire, Battania, and Sturgia, reaching as far as the shores of Vlandia. They were without number. It seemed as though a little further west and the ocean waves could reach their horses' hooves. The army of Vlandia was ordered to deploy to a defensive position in the city of Elberet. All its inhabitants had abandoned it long before the battle. And here, in the lifeless city of deafening silence the warriors stood on its walls, watching the impending storm of dust and fire. Another day. Another hour. Another minute and they would meet chaos face to face. They would meet their death defending their land. |
