How to prevent Cretas Monarchy from being eliminated early on

I'm sure it's obvious or manageable, but just remember to talk to them to set their equipments for the first time, and also how you can change their names to anything you prefer.
I knew about the equipment, but not names. Thanks for the tip.

How to prevent Cretas Monarchy from being eliminated early on

Agreed. As long as you have good archers, you can mostly hold any massive besieges. Re-positioning your troops manually on better angles works best, but, like some cases you can't, the auto deployment could suffice.

It's random, most runs small factions falls, some runs they survive. But if it were me, I would take a town for Cretas, that should give them enough room to grow. Then, just stall defensively till they garrison their strength or until a ceasefire is called.

I love Ingvar custom mercs. I find them very fun and strong. I rely on them for everything, especially sieges.
Never used Ingvar mercs myself, so I'll use give them a try on one of my attempts.

How to prevent Cretas Monarchy from being eliminated early on

    Hi,

well, this is a dilemma, you have no time and it looks to me that the mercs in taverns are mostly of low quality when your lvl is low. Merc shieldmen are in low supply at all times to make things worse. I would try merc outpost and maybe hire some of Ingvars special trained boys to experiment with their possible builds while there anyway.
Your real problem is to get lots of good ranged early on. It looks to me that recruiting freed prisoners is not going to cut it as the high lvl ones will not join a nobody like you anyway. If you are lucky at tournaments hire trainer companions and buy slaves but it will take too long time to train them girls to stalkers. But gladiators upgrade fast and they are VERY good.
So go to Ingvar and while en route hire folks at tavern if you`re lucky enough to find highly skilled ones.

You will probably have to do a few restarts before you find your way to save Cretas. But do not despair, even if you can`t join them with a walled settlement you just took you might join as a merc. They will stay alive as long as you serve them and if you take a settlement it will become theirs and voilà, Cretas are up and running again. I pulled off that one with Aroulo vs. Zann so it can be done.

Thanks for the help, it's appreciated.
I'll run through the game a few times to optimize the routine of recruiting/training and hopefully one of the times I'll get lucky enough to manage securing a stable town.

How to prevent Cretas Monarchy from being eliminated early on

    Well,

Zann invasion at earliest day possible(40 days IIRC) keeps the weak factions alive for quite a while longer, in general. Then you must plasquarise from day one, which becomes more difficult for each update. Meaning yours getting a strong ranged heavy outfit ASAP and taking a weakly defended walled settlement, or several just after they`ve been successfully sieged by someone. Then seek vassalage with Cretas. Winning tournaments while betting on yourself is a pre-requisite to enlist good troops without training up weaklings. There is no time for that.
I have not tried Cretas myself yet, but I like siding with Sut and that`s abt. a comparable case, maybe somewhat easier. Cretas troops are actually quite strong but that`s abt it.

After winning tournaments, should I recruit from taverns or take my chances with the mercenary outpost near the Hakkon Empire? I'm not siding with them for troops necessarily, I just like them as a sort of underdog faction, and for troops that require training I use Drachen cavalry, Maccavian infantry and archers.

How to prevent Cretas Monarchy from being eliminated early on

So, as the title suggests, the Cretas Monarchy is consistently getting eliminated by the more powerful surrounding factions - Drahara and Reich Des Drachen - and I want to know if it's possible to prevent this. Even if I were to join - either as a mercenary or vassal - my army won't be strong...
