What made you sad today? v.IV

My granddad died. Hardly unexpected, as he was in his eighties and in hospice care but still.

Hear pigs being slaughtered in this Chinese village most nights. They're loud and disturbing. They taste nice the next morning though.

Why do farmers always kill animals at night? Do they enjoy making you feel like you're in a steam greenlight horror game?
I've never seen anyone slaughtering at night. Even the commercial places around here start at ~5 in the morning. It's cool outside and it gives you plenty of time to work.

Damn. Who shows that to a 13 year old?

Countryside people. It's all snapping chicken's necks and killing pigs and letting their heads to dry in the same place where you brush your teeth and stuff like that.
Yup. I was helping slaughtering animals when I was 10ish, and certainly when I was 13. All hands are needed for the process of slaughtering and preparing animals. This wasn't even in a particularly remote rural area.

A man in Amsterdam feels the need to confess, so he goes to his priest.

"Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. During WWII, I hid a refugee in my attic."

"Well," answers the priest, "that's not a sin."'

"But I made him agree to pay me 20 guilders for every week he stayed."

"I admit that wasn't good, but you did it for a good cause."

"Oh, thank you, Father. That eases my mind. I have one more question."

    "What is that, my son?"

"Do I have to tell him the war is over?"

    That is so bad.

Although I think the joke is getting past its sell by date.
You could always change it to Rwanda/Bosnia/Iraq/Sudan/Etc. for a more modern flair.

Bloc 2.0 is up now. Most prominent changes seem to be that the world is divided up into many more regions and that there is a new resource which you use to build stuff.

I think semen would if anything have caustic basic salts rather than caustic acidic salts, what with the acidity of the vagina and all.

Playing the Violin (also, the Random Instruments Thread)

    Pharaoh Llandy said:
I mean, I had a guitar at one point, but my fingers were a tad too short to reach the strings without catching other strings (it was acoustic, I guess I could have gone for an electric, but meh) so I sold it. Plus, getting my head around the concept of chords was extremely confusing. Coming from a woodwind background, playing more than one note at a time was like.... WATDAFUQ???

BUT! The violin looked easier to learn and play.

I learned to play guitar after learning to play violin, and I personally found guitar much easier than violin. However, at that point I had been playing stringed instruments for a number of years which helped somewhat. Violin is certainly not the easiest instrument to learn to play.

    * How often will I realistically be replacing my bow?
While you shouldn't ever have to replace the bow, you will have to get the bow re-haired occasionally. When you're not playing, loosen it up and it'll be fine.
