  1. Simple guide for Polish storyline

I think that more emphasis should be put on the fact that playing along the storyline may/will actually punish the player for effective play. There are at least three occasions on which the player can lose his possessions, like fortresses, cities, villages and soldiers. Therefore it is quite important to archive save before talking to the quest giver, especially when claiming "reward" (which can be as far from being "reward" as possible). This is all due to lazy scripting, I believe.
  2. Request for next patch

I wish there was an option to execute lords. With a steep penalty to honor/relations, or even morale, but it would make games more realistic and faster.

    Other things:

The game has many scripting errors (I encountered some when sweeping Czestochowa for example, INVALID PARTY ID and other), fortunately none I know really break the game.

Water poisoning is too dangerous now - I cannot survive the fight if I need to flee. (Why is it necessary to kill every guard when fleeing, instead of just... well, fleeing?). The disguise armor is so weak it cannot protect from very strong muskets most (all?) guards are carrying, and the sabre is so slow and weak that I cannot ever parry properly, with one-handed weapons skill at over 300. Not to mention that 9+ guards, in a formation called "firing squad", would be quite intimidating even when the player would be properly equipped.

Most egregious "feature", which also adds insult to the injury of fighting a small army when under-equipped, is of course the glass wall. I don't remember glass walls from Warband. Why city locations are so small, and glass walls are just behind every corner? Or before it. I've actually found some invisible walls, which can be accessed from the other side. Well, that's just a lazy design. I died so many times trying to hide behind a building, and encountering that invisible wall of death. It was like that The Matrix scene, only here the wall was invisible, hence more pervert.

There should be more checks for actual conditions in scripts, and more branching. Example 1: I did two of three quest for Polish village near beginning of the game, but I did the last one after some two years in game. It requires persuading one lord to forfeit taxes. When asked about it, my character says that nobody knows him and it would be very difficult. Well, at that time everybody actually knew him (he was a lord of the Polish faction), many liked him (friends), and persuading or even paying the taxes was as easy as stealing a candy from a child. So it looked as if my hero was dishonest, or trying to extort something from the villagers for the "near impossible" task. It should check that the hero is known, and the task is actually a formality. Example 2: I won a battle and captured Carl Gustaff, the king of Swedes. I dumped all other prisoners in my dungeon and came to the Polish king, who then asked me to find him a Swede for interrogation. Who would be more Swedish than a Swedish king, methinks, but it's a no-no. So I came back to may fortress nearby, took a Swedish lord from the dungeon, and a militiaman just in case (I knew he was Swedish thanks to moustache, fortunately every nation wears different moustaches). And who was deemed worthy of waterboarding session by the king? That militiaman. Either the script should be more flexible, or the questnote should say "bring me any low born scum, we don't interrogate nobles".

EDIT: I've forgotten about the most important one: when someone is added to the party by the script, like a claimant, or a special hero (Zagloba, Mamai), or a hero who is returning from Academy, and there are over 32 different units on the list, all ordinary (i.e. non-heroes) units at the end are trimmed - lost. Imagine you have 32 units of heroes and single men units in the beginning, and a band of 100 of heavy cavalry at the end (132 total). After that trimming  you are left with 32 men total. Very annoying. Interestingly, this doesn't happen when recruiting from commanders.
  3. Unconventional character builds.

A bit off topic but a plus for the new patch, horses can now take a little more punishment. Replacing spirited thoroughbreds every 3rd battle was becoming annoying. Historically did they still use horse armour in the infancy of firearms? I'm guessing they did, or at least until firearms became the norm.

Yes, there was horse armor in use during the time depicted in the game. For example hussars had their horses equipped with "breast plate", which was intended to deflect pikes, unless the pikemen were lucky (or very accurate). But in my experience, which is limited to the last patch, horses are rather fragile. I use heavy thoroughbreds, and recently had to purchase a third one, because others are lame in the inventory. I've even lost one horse (troop horse, not thoroughbred) during one battle near village [when battling close to the village, the battlefield can be placed in that village, but enemies will be dismounted for some reason] so 200 cossacsks were aiming at my horses. I was losing my horse during every stage, and in the last one I had it no more - it was killed for good. Also I frequently lose up to three horses per battle, especially against Swedes, who just don't die. I feel like horses are weaker than in Warband. If they were even weaker before the patch, I can see why they've changed that.

On a side note, when fighting against heavier armored enemies (like the Swedes), I started to place accurate-but-non-lethal shoots with my double-barrelled pistol, and Firearms at 300. Since I carry only 18 bullets, I think that a lance is a better investment now, because the lance always kill when placed accurately, and it is not necessary to slow down for aiming.
  4. Consequence to looting villages?

On the other hand, helping villagers (like when you find a farmer in the tavern and play The Magnificient Seven) will often lead to similar hit, because "evil" lords will be displeased that you help THEIR villagers. "Good" lords will also ask you not to repeat that charity, but at least they won't lower their disposition to you. Anyway, I don't like looting villages because in the long run they all are MINE, so…

Yeah, it's a kind of a very heavy grenade. I wish they actually implemented headsplosions in the game. Aiming would be more fun.

    The config file says battle_size = 1.0000 I don't get it.  Do I change it to battle_size = 2.0000 :?:
Its some sort of algebraic expression, I don't know the formula but I think you can get 1000 men by putting 5

    Isn't it like this, 1 = 150, 2 = 150x2=300, 3 = 150x3=450 etc? I have no idea actually but I thought it was like this.

    The exact formula is N=(battle_size*120)+30

So minimal size is 30 guys, and to get 1000 guys you need battle_size at 8.080 or very near that value.

I have joined Polish faction, which is in war with Cossacks. I haven't started the plot, because I've heard it involves fighting with Swedish, Turks and Muscovites, which I want to avoid. Now my little problem is, that AI of my allied lords is completely different than enemy Cossacks. Here are differences:

    Cossacks:
    1. Gang up with around 10 armies, usually under Khmelnitsky, but sometimes under different lord. They do it consistently, even after defeat.
    2. Go to one city/castle, siege it, and then of course take it.
    3. When fighting Poles, they try (and success) with dividing enemies, so they fight one army at a time.
    4. After conquering a town or castle they install a sizable garrison, like 200-300. Poles trying to recapture the fortress usually stand no chance, because average Polish army is at most as big as half of the garrison.

    Poles:
    1. Usually go alone, or with only one friend. Earlier they were teaming up to six armies, but apparently got bored with that idea.
    2. When besieging, they go with insufficient numbers, and siege for a couple of days, they abandon siege. Earlier, when they were forming larger groups I was witness to following scene: King Casimir with allies went to siege Cherkassy. After one day they went to siege Kiev Korsun. After another day they went  to siege Cherkassy again. After repeating they got bored and went to burn some villages. After another couple of days Khmelnitsky with armies of 1300 people came, and started to eliminate Poles one by one. If they ganged up on him they would probably win, but such an idea never occured to them.
    3. When fighting enemies they allow them to gang up on Polish armies, and separate them. They don't like to chase for too long, instead prefer to fight foragers or looters.
    4. After conquering a castle (usually with my gratuitous help) they don't bother to install much garrison if any. So I don't know why Cossacks with they 1000-1500 men don't storm it right away, but usually lay siege for a couple of day, before commencing battle. There is one castle I was recapturing five times, and of course never awarded, so it will be lost again soon.

Now I know, that if I was a marshal, I could order Poles to combine their forces and strike where it hurts. But I'm not. When I try to convince any lord to follow me I fail, but even if I don't, two armies would be not enough. I started to pick up Cossack lords one by one, and if I capture one, I usually put them in my fortress' dungeon. But it doesn't help much, because others take at most a week to reorganize and try to recapture some city. When King Casimir was offed by Cossacks, he was "out of town" for a month! (and I was mercenary then, so I lost payment for that period). Besides Cossacks started to travel in groups of two armies of more, and they are incredible shooters.

Now I'm wondering if these differences are hard coded, or this is caused by me taking a side, so if I was Cossack, then Poles would show a brilliant strategy, and Cossacks would be asses? Or there are "national" differences? Cossacks seem to be most badass in my game. Swedes for instance are less benign, and they hold less territory than any others, except Tatars (Swedes even conquered their capital, Bakhchisaray, and have defended it like ten times, the town is now almost a ruin, hehe). But Poles, despite large territory, seems to be just behind Tatars when it comes to ineptness. I don't know how to help them with my army of 100-110 people.

Once you start the Deluge, get Zagloba into your group, the Polish empire gets decimated from all sides.  They will lose Warsaw and Karkov fairly quick....part of the storyline, and if you do not progress quickly....there may not be much of an empire left to save or play with when you become Marshal.  The first game I played along the Polish storyline, I messed around as a merc for awhile and by the time I did the relic quest, the Polish were down to 3 towns/fortress.  I restarted and built my renown up to 150 first by soloing a lot of bandit groups and when I joined the Polish faction advanced much faster getting the relic quest behind me and advancing to the Crimean Khanate part.  During this part you get to be a marshal for the rebels and can attack the Cossacks, Moscovite and Swedes....the rebels were at war with all 3 groups except the Polish.  I took 4-5 towns/fortress from the Cossacks and 2-3 towns from the Moscovite.  This took a lot of pressure off the Polish faction and during this time and they did not lose anymore towns/fortressess.

Thanks. That means I shouldn't worry too much about Polish well-being for now. Are Cossacks (their lords, villages or cities) needed for anything in the Polish storyline? Because maybe I will be able to wipe them out, taking the opportunity of war, which could help me in future. Less enemies, less worries.

Basically no, you will have to fight them when you are leading the Crimean rebellion.  At the end, after the Deluge, you have to wipe out all other factions.  However, there is only one reason to not wipe them out too early....when a faction dies and is totally eliminated, the lords that belong to that faction will migrate to all the other factions.  So the remaining factions will get more lords.  In my opinion, it is best to wipe out the Swedes first...the swedish reiters are the best castle defenders in my opinion....they can shoot and melee and wear lots of armor.

I hoped that some of Cossacks would join ranks of Commonwealth, not only of prospective enemies. Hm, Swedes are tough nuts it seems, and I'd need to provoke a war with them. Maybe I just leave a city or two of Cossacks before starting the quest, which I can do any moment now.

i dont see how tactics helps because i had it a 5 once but it never really helped its usually 158 vs my 15  ?

I believe the higher tactics, the more men will enter the fight at the beginning. But the algorithm (as I've read) compares also enemies Tactics, or something which they use instead. Probably if there are many enemy lords, their highest tactics is used. Or maybe even they give bonus on each other.
  9. How do you make money in this game?

If you are a part of a faction, i.e. a lord, you can recruit from villages of your faction. Even if you already have hundreds of men under you command. But if the villages don't like you, then I wouldn't count on that.

Personally I make money mainly the same way as it was in Warband - after some changes in patches even the prices are comparable.
    1. Instead of dyeworks or tanneries in Waband I use merchant guilds, it's easier. I just need to remember, that only enemy cities will be accessible after a war breaks, fortresses are closed. Also if some lord doesn't like me (because I had a duel with him for instance) then he closes his fortress to me, even without a war.
    2. I send caravans - it's best done before joining a faction - and use assessment of prices before that. After some time you don't need that for select cities. After joining a faction and during war you caravan will be  hunted by enemy. I always send only two guards (plus caravan master) and escort the caravan my self. Sometimes I create a convoy, by escorting a caravan sent by a mayor at the same time. When I wander off the looters or other enemies attack the caravan, and I help them - that way I don't need a small and fast army - big and slow is enough to crush the attackers
    3. I remember basic prices, and buy low, sell high. Especially powder (buy in 100-300 range, sell 700-1000+), furs, alcohols, flour (best sold in villages), and villages stuff (best sold in cities, like beef and dead animals). Since castles/fortresses are not valid target for caravans, they often buy powder and other things at high prices. This is my main source of income after joining faction, maybe apart from merchant guild.
    4. I sell prisoners - low levels to guy in Reval (Ramun or what's his name), higher levels to any slaver ("ransom broker"). I agree to ransoms for lords - it costs me nothing in honor, and gives much money.
    5. I do quests, especially ransom girl quest, but also village quest. I sell loot afterward...
    6. Village income is not bad, fortresses are much worse. Cities should be the best, but it's harder to get them. Unfortunately upkeep cost of trainers/commanders is very high, so I consider villages the best source of income.
    7. In the beginning I fight all brawlers in taverns - one fight series (6 fights) means 300 thalers for free. Unfortunately they chicken out later, when you are stronger.

If the huge enemy numbers are your problem do what i do .
Kill there armies in 1 go  i took down an army of 900 cossack's with my army of 107 men and only lost 13 men to death in the battle all of whom were replaced by elite faction troops i set free in the process .
If you can wipe out enough armies and carry off 2-3 prisoners ur good just pick them off a couple at a time and lock them up once uve locked up enough of them the polish will come back on there own because of pure numerical advantage and because the cossack are spread to thinly to defend everything.

But I can't win a battle with 107 against 900 cossacks. I can win when the ratio is 1:2 or even 1:3, but the higher it is, the higher are my lossess (by percentage). When I stand against 900 guys I start only with a handful of my men - less than 20, with max Tactics at 7. So it is possible to win 100 vs 100 without any lossess, though it depends on terrain and luck (army compositions). But higher than that - there will be losses. Even if I use the Murderous Hussar Lance. Cossacks have very efficient shooters and a lot of them. And not bad cavalry, at least quite effective against my men.

And so far the good tactics against cities was water poisoning, but this is available only to certain cities, these near rivers.

Anyway, what I'm doing now is to mimic their style, which is to provoke the last army in their group. If they are far enough and nobody (or only one) of their allies joins, then I can win.
  11. A Letter To Tsar.

Defeated lords are stinking cowards, and they travel incognito. So nobody knows where they are, and they can't be looted even by professional looters. Also they need some time to patch themselves up. They may be offline for more than 1-2 weeks, my record was about one month.
  12. Trade Item Values

If this is before the patch (I'm not sure which patch was that), then that's the answer. These prices are impossible now, except smoked fish and flour (but they need to have really big stocks of them in store, more than 20, and no caravans in quite a time). Cheapest powder I've found is 100.
  13. Trade Item Values

The prices you give are so much lower than the base prices, that I doubt anyone had encountered cheaper ones. I had 8 for flour, but only in the cities with biggest production. Cheap cabbages are 10-15, while I don't trade in hemp. After some time prices of high volume items will gravitate toward base, in general, because caravans will move them. Even NPC caravans will change prices. Also prices of items which are present in very small quantity in cities, like one or two, will be changed to base after sufficient time.

But whats wrong with flour for say 30 thalers, which is common? Flour is seek after in villages - I usually sell it in 100-130 range, sometimes higher, and buy below 35 in cities. Beef on the other hand is very cheap in villages (like 8 thalers) and can be very expensive in cities, sometimes over 200. The same goes with all village products.

  16. Polish storyline: How do I get a new city?

My castle gives me much less money than every of my two villages. It is like ~500 thalers, and the cost of all commanders and improvement guys (merchant and the like) is like ~3600 (I wish I could fire some of them, but can't), so I actually lose on my castle. However, my villages give me much more - the rich one gives something in 7000-8000 range. All this is significantly less than I can make by trading powder and beef though.

Note than you may anticipate when the king decides to give/refuse you a thief, and save some time earlier, and reload.

  18. Skill question: Surgery

It depends on who you wasted what. Surgery is a party skill so your main character adds a leader bonus to the highest one, though only partially (2 lev adds +1, 5 lev adds +2, 8 lev adds +3 and 10 lev adds +4). Personally I always give my main character 2 levels in almost all party skills, and add one one or two companions in a skill/skills.  The highest one is used, plus the leader bonus, if the poor sucker is not injured. If any of your guys is injured he doesn't count, so if you concentrated these skillpoints on your leader and two or three other guys, then I wouldn't consider them wasted. Any of them can be injured in a fight.
