Alternatively, could you simply port the Knight and Man-at-arms mercenaries right into the Rhodok troop tree, a la the later Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth? The only other time we see these troops is in tournaments or under the player's command.

Finally, is there any reason a particular coat of arms should be restricted to one faction? I know there were trends in different countries, but azure, a bend or is the same no matter where you are.

The point about the mod is to recreate the feel of the era, so it wouldn't make sense to have Western-style knights fighting for the Rhodoks at this time.

Coat of arms: there is in practice. If it were possible to represent all of what is probably 1000+ possible combinations of those standard heraldic elements in the game, a few identical shields here and there would not be an issue and would be very rare. In reality, each would also be painted in a different style, and the knight have other individual features. With five surcoat colors and ten designs, it is another story.
  2. Lionel and Friedrich

    Thanks!

Yes, Lionel, Friedrich and Bors replace Native npcs because I didn't know yet how to add new npcs - also, the back stories pretty much fit their characters. The next update will have further tailored back stories for e.g. Friedrich.

Rolf is now John, mainly because there is another guy now named Hrolf, the Northern lord (who is based on Hrolf or "Rollo" of the early Normans).
  3. Very good mod! ty! but 2 asks come...

I'm playing this mod and i find myself very pleased! Its very interesting for a passionate historian like myself, Middle Age specialist.

But  i want do 2 asks to the creator:

    1) there's a chance to have (now or in a future version) jousts with fence and lances? for be precise: the classical jousts like Sir W. Scott's "Ivanhoe", with passes horseback and lances;

    2) this mod is compatible with some mod that allow to the player to choose his/her heraldry banner? (i have seen some mod that allow this option)

Thank you of the nice replies, i come back to my 1257 because i want become somewhat famous^^

2 - not quite sure what you mean? You can choose your own banner just like Native. You need to follow the instructions in the readme to display it on your horse or surcoat.

1 - Again, too early for the fence, which apparently is late medieval. But I am hoping to include one-on-one jousting in the next update; Galtran is helping me with the code.
  4. about weapons

    well,

i continue to love hardly this mod, the most beautiful and historical correct ever seen until now, but i have seen some minor things that i hope will be corrected:

    1- i sense the loss of 2 handed swords, very hard to find in the game, also if they was fairly common in the XIII century-I have seeked here and there but seem these weapons aren't simple to find;

    2-lances haven't any handguard-Note: i'm not sure if in this age lances already had handguard or not, i may be mistaken;

3-i liked some other closed helm, like this
    http://www.bottega.medioevo.com/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=1427&zenid=f8dfa7478fab1f53d0b5d0f30953467b

was as pot helm but pointed

    Answers are quite simple.

1- They do exist, just not bastard swords - and from what I hear, they were not very common yet, ergo the same in the game.

2- That's because they didn't at the time.

3- Too early for that type of helm - they only started to point toward the end of the century; what you have there seems even later.
  5. Gifts Question

Isn't "Perkunas" some pagan Lithuanian God?

That's right. God of thunder (and probably a couple of other things), known by several peoples in the region.

It's not a coincidence. The horse is pretty fast.

Lethwyn provides you with a book on leadership, the Life of Charlemagne, or "Historia Caroli Magni". It was a highly popular legend that served as an inspiration to many knights in those days.

The Khergit contender only has the resources to provide you with a bow, if I remember correctly.
  6. Was RCM used?

Good point about the peasants holding down a knight.

I was in touch with Ron Losey at the early stages of the mod. I'd love to feature the RCM but unfortunately there isn't yet a version out for the commercial release of M&B, and I would need that to base the stats on. Adjusting every one individually would be extremely time consuming and I'm afraid my time is very short these days.
  7. item availability?

Only on day 80 or so, but already think this is my favorite mod.  Just wondering if 2 items were removed due to period authenticity, or if they just haven't spawned yet. Specifically looking for the jousting lance and the charger. The lance I can live w/out; I just like the idea of taking lots of prisoners on the battlefield. I sorely miss the charger tho. My favorite horse by far. Were they just not bred during that period or do I just need to be more patient in the stores?

Chargers as they feature in Native have plate armour that is basically from the Renaissance. Horses at this time had chain mail barding at best.

There are two issues with the jousting lance for this time period: 1. Blunt lances were only just starting to be used - you did actually risk death at a tournament in early times. 2. The shape: the sloped guard in front of and behind your hand are very late medieval. Lances at this time were basically still shaped like spears. And I'm not sure about the trident tip either...
  8. item availability?

    Rubberduck said:
So? It is Gram, made by demi-god Weyland the Smith. Did you expect butterknife?

That one made me laugh.

Jek, you're right that it is highly powerful. But keep in mind that there are also weapons with the "masterwork" attribute out there which have very comparable stats. This is meant to be, in effect a masterwork sword.
  9. No rain

Rain and fog occur here like in Native, the mod doesn't change anything about that. Try the Rhodok lands around Jelkala, they are often very foggy.
  10. Rhodoks...Commonwealth?

I'd be happy to clarify: "Commonwealth" in English is an ambiguous word - it can mean a federation, as in the British Commonwealth, and it has sometimes been used as an alternative word to republic - see also the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. It is used here to describe the political organization of the Rhodoks as a fairly loose federation of lords. Its use is partly inspired by the later Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Spanky-- I really like the look of the mod. The Order looks like it's straight out of the Morgan Bible. Very nice work. I do wish that there were another Western European-style faction with the bright colors of both the Bible and secular knights (Poland, maybe?).

Thanks! Poland is a little too far west for this setting - also, I'm not an expert but I believe their equipment only started to resemble Western troops toward the end of the middle ages.

I agree, it would be nice to have several Western-style factions - let's see, perhaps I'll find the time for a new mod in the future. The obstacle is partyl technical - since you can't assign heraldry to individual knights, it's desirable not to have a guy bearing the same shield in another faction - so any new faction would mean an additional pool of 10+ shield designs for ordinary knights... so here, the history behind this "Baltic" setting helps overcome that issue.
  13. so.. looks interesting

    Skot the Sanguine said:
Oh, I also now get that you mean primarily the equipment of the mod is authentic to the time period.

It goes further than that - it's basically cultural. The heraldic style and colors are kept as close to the era as possible, also e.g. the shield designs of the common knights for hire, and the names of the npcs and castles are based on real-world cultures of the period. In the case of the Northmen, the idea is stretched to the point where their equipment lags behind a generation or two of what the Scandinavian kingdoms would have historically fielded. This is more plausible than renaissance armors that could not have yet existed, while historically, Denmark especially had progressed much further toward adopting the new technologies of the south.
  14. Map Colors?

I wouldn't know about that, sorry. The color mode used in the mod is something Armagan put in there, all I did was activate it. I assume you are aware of the fact that the text is red, as opposed to green when you mouse over a town or army that is at war with you?
  15. so.. looks interesting

Thanks Skot, no, I appreciate your insights, definitely not taken to be an attack. Re: authenticity, I guess you could say I'm aiming to represent the world of 1257 more than individual decisions taken within that world in what became our history, if you see what I mean. So, being plausible, an order with a red cross would still be "authentic", while e.g. full plate armor magically appearing from nowhere wouldn't... of course, had I used a map of the Baltic and called them the Livonian Order, I would give them the historical coat of arms, no question. That's just an aside, to explain my philosophy here.

Some fascinating history you bring up there. Yes, I see how Livonia would have been but one domain with it's own administrative head. So I guess it being called an "Order" - there being no Prussian Order, for example - would have only been a theoretical distinction, not a practical one?
  16. Congratulations are in order!

Thanks LordFu, I'm glad you like it. I set out to do the game like I would have wanted to play it, basically. Unfortunately, mainstream games and movies seem to treat the Middle Ages like Fantasy rather than make use of the cool styles they had in the different periods.

    Hi gents

Awesome mod. I love the new tournaments and the mid 13th century feeling (plate armour off, thanks God).

Just a question: Is it possible to make recruits available at castles and towns?

    Thanks

You need to post that in the suggestions forum, I almost missed it. It hasn't occurred to me, I might look into it. Not much point in recruiting at castles though, I mean those are mainly garrison populations and if they're not already yours, I doubt the castle lord will take kindly to you recruiting his people.
  17. Suggestions

    Latinikon said:
Spanky, a few suggestions I have to say:

      1. Have you thought about adding that script that allows the battle to continue even after you have been knocked out?
My personal opinion is that implementing that would be very realistic; and fun to watch your troops struggle to win the day...

      2. In a quest when you are authorized to collect taxes from the village/town, when there is a mutiny against the player, could you discard shields from player party?
As you said Spanky, a good experienced veteran never leaves his sword behind, but what about his shield?
For instance: lets say you and your companion take a walk around the village premises, enjoy the nature, go to the nearest hill, observe the horizon...
and on your return to the village center you are suddenly ambushed by angry mobsters (no, not gangsters with tommy-guns, just good old angry villagers)!
In that whole picture I cant imagine that I would be carrying a shield around...

      3. Well, keep up the good work!

    Thanks Latinikon.

1.: No I haven't, I wasn't aware of that one actually. Sounds great to me, I'll check it out. How does it work? Do you have control of the camera?

2.: I would prefer that solution myself. Unfortunately, a shield seems to be treated as a "weapon" in python. So you can specify that the characters won't have a helmet, but if you want them to have their own swords etc., you can't remove the shield. The only alternative I see now is to give everyone a standard weapon, but that would be even less realistic - e.g. if you're a Khergit, you would have a Western sword in your hand. Sorry! If there's any expert out there who can come up with a solution, let me know. Another issue I've had with that scene is that I would prefer to have you face more peasants, then you could have the original group of four. That number seems to be fixed.
  18. Bug reports

Thanks! Let me know when that is fixed. I will consider incorporating panaromic in future updates. How does it work, btw? Does it simply replace the "painted" horizon in the skybox, or does it change the "3d" hills that are currently in there?
  19. so.. looks interesting

Skot, I don't proclaim to be an expert on the subject and I suppose you might be right. I must say though, the only argument among the ones you've mentioned clearly indicating that they might have worn the black cross is in that excerpt where two Swordbrothers put on new mantles. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they did still remain autonomous? Was the original coat of arms given up entirely?

The red cross in the mod might have been based on a false assumption, but essentially, it wouldn't change its authenticity, since it is still a fictional world based on historic fact. There are aesthetic arguments for keeping the red cross, so I will reconsider at some point, but I won't be changing it in the near future.

That said, thanks for the input! The expertise is certainly appreciated. As previously mentioned, I'm considering adding more NPC knights at some point. A Teutonic brother would be a prime candidate.

  20. Post your screenshots here!

Nice ones, Latinikon. Looks like you added some new troops in that first pic. Are those warrior monks?

What happened to Friedrich's hair?
