    It's not a bug per say, it's because you are attempting to move them where they cannot go. As Edwin said above, you can fix it quickly by:
    -Hitting F1 to bring up commands
    -Press LMB and hold, then drag to make a line with the flags
    -Let go when your happy
    -Your men will now move in the formation

    Once you get the hang of it you don't notice this issue too much.

    Ah, that does solve it, since i couldn't make them stand in a line again. It just seemed weird to me that they didn't regain their line formation if i told them to stand in a line again.

    Edited title because i noticed more units than just my archers get stuck in a square formation constantly.

    When archers move too close to an edge, they go into a square formation and they no longer reform a line or any other formation. The only formations that kind of move them are the Circle and Loose formations. It's made it so the archers in the middle and back can't shoot, losing me a lot of value.

    Resolved Companion Governor doesn't do anything?

    I've assigned a companion to be the Governor of my castle fief and tried to see what she'd do. After about 10 minutes she hasn't queue'd a single upgrade for the fief. Is it because of a lack of a certain skill or do her upgrades simply not appear in the queue?

    Yup. It seems you have to get them in your party and set them as quartermaster for them to learn the skill, at which point it levels up very quickly until skill level 25. Also, setting clan jobs is very frustrating. If you want to set your quartermaster, you have to flip through either Scout and Engineer or Surgeon to get to it and doing that clears out whoever had the Scout and Engineer jobs or the Surgeon job. So you have to set them in a particular order otherwise it won't work.

    You can click on the Clan Role button to open a dropdown of roles for faster selection. Looks like this:
