    battle advice

I have already turned my back to the game, but gave it a try in 1.58 the other day. Ouite shure the devs changed something as I had the same battle experiences as you have had. What looks like an easy sweep turns in a slaughter with appalling losses once the battle is over. Often enough my forces were utterly crushed and I found myself in chaines...
Let´s look where it might come from. I noticed that the AI Armys have a much better line up then some month ago. No more recruits and tier 1 troops in abundance but a good solid army composition of experienced troops with a lot more cavalry as we has been seen previously. I noticed that the enemies heavy cavalry spawns when the first wave of the enemy is broken and our troops are in full pursuit. Thus before I am able to comand, control and regroup, the entire engagement is going worse turning to a bloodbath.
I noticed also that only the first rank of my archers is firing, second and third rank fills in the losses only. Not like the enemy, which is aproaching in skirmish order with all men firing. Once given command to the sergeants, my archers run to and fro and are even less useful, being cut down by enemy cavalry in the end.
My heavy cavalry is getting spiked up by enemy spearmen as I have no control which enemy they attack unless I lead them in person.
It seems that engaging the enemy in batlle has become as much frustrating as every thing else in this game. Well the game, it looks good, at least...

    Items Disappearing from Inventory

In the past two weeks I have noticed certain looted items have been disappearing from my inventory, being replaced with "trash item". This happens after reloading a save.
Although I didn´t notice that something went missing, but I got "Trash Items" too after visiting towns belonging to my kingdom. Maybe it is a kind of present from the towns magistrates to the king, as very seldom, powerful and expensive horses pop up in my inventory too.

    edit: I have no mods

Is there a way to assign party leaders to lead specific units?

Hi BoBB, go to the party screen and give your companions the number (one to eight) and therefore assign them to the branch you would like them to join at the start of the battle. For my part, any companion I hire is choosen in order to fulfill a special role. An experienced footsoldier to lead my infantry, a skillfull archer to lead the archers and so on... If you use cheats you may even give them a banner (find it at the end of the missile weapons) and you are always aware where the frontline is. Good luck chap!

Clans are leaving my kingdom. Am I not a fair ruler?

It seems they stick to their former overlords, even if they join your kingdom. So, if you give them a fief that belonged to their former kingdom, they are more likely to defect back. Do as the romans did, place them on the other side of the world...

    @Grumpy181155
You can open the console while pushing Alt and ^ (the button left of 1) on your keyboard. Maybe different on US keyboards I may assume.

Hideouts and Village Quest "Need help with ...... bandits"

-with 1.5.3 they gave us a powerfull tool concerning town or village related issues which bring down loyality or even start starvation (prosperity-starvation downward spiral).
You can set several parameter with the console, for example: campaign.set_settlement_variable Name of Town prosperity number

How can I keep my Companions out of harms way?

Gentlemen, your help concerning this matter has been highly appriciated. It seems that we cannot keep our valuable companions out of the killing zone during sieges. This is the actual status of the game, but maybe altered in the future. For now I have changed my tactics.

Before even declaring war I buy all supplies out of the town and the surroundig villages. After the start of the hostillities I lay siege to the city "long enough and strong enough", bombarding the defense engines and walls to the ground. After prolonged siege usually more than the half of the defenders have been killed or died through starvation. Now it is time to storm the breaches. The desperate defenders break almost instantly. I never lost a companion since.

However, these are mid or late game recommendations, of course.

edit: Doesn´t work anymore. With launch of 1.5.3 defenders have almost no losses during siege.

    Any update on Children?

Nope, you can have them but they won't join the world when they hit 18.
Yep, they stay with their mom in your hometown. I tried almost everything to get them unbound... Believe it or not., a walkaround in the town where they stuck did the job. Was able to take them to my party.

How can I keep my Companions out of harms way?

1.52 On my last playthrough, spanning almost 20 game years, I lost more than two dozen companions. House rules are: one companion as leader for slot one to four each - all others on slot eight, my close retinue. Those on slot eight are my family members and the surgeon, the scout and the...

    Strange player party size INCREASE

Hello, it has been game day 349 that brought a strange player party size increase: Right after winning some huge battles the party size increased from 239 to more than 450. I filled my party up to the maximum and conquered a castle nearby. It was rather late, I saved and quit. So, when I started...
