    Your doing something wrong mate. I have 0 companions 100 recruits and i just join armies. Replace with peasents later for cheaper up keep. Make easy 100k a week.

    Not sure why. With 100 athletics you can get by as infantry in heavy armor without ever skilling for it. On this concept all skills should be 100. For beta branch i can agree just not released.

    I make good money as a merc. I legaly commit crime , raid, war loot, and when war ends I go to next at war kingdom.

    I have done mock fights with imitation weaponry hence I know first hand the pros and cons. I also do alot of reading on historical uses not youtube as i dislike the biased influence alot of videos have. I
    Will 9/10 favor my spear shield and short sword. Even acknowledging that an equal skilled opponent can overpower with sword shield. Without shield spear every time.

    Its annoying yes but i do it every time. I use every single group tab so i can better micromanage troops.

    Hideouts are easy, ever notice there is a stealth mechanic? Crouch, noble longbow, high archery, and be good at head shots. You will basically solo all of them regardless of troop count. Just remmber not to walk while drawing bow string or you will alert them. Instant kills tend not to alert them or if it does they wander around and do not immediately engage. You can also melee kill quite but that is much harder.

    @Alaric Kerensky yes I assumed up hill battles where we are out numbered, if we are equal in number or larger i tend to just funnel them with archers and skirmishers on flanks and cavalry on their archers.

    If your able to keep track of everything going on complex formations and tactics you will find that it works out better in the long run. Where this really fails hard is in siege as your guys say F U and ignore all orders. Second thing about keeping a moving battle is that AI seem to lose moral quicker and flee sooner when they are unable to deal sufficient damage vs their losses. If you can cause alot of death early in the fight with minimal loss alot will just flee.

    There is already an entire thread that talked this too death. Before asking for better handling, better damage, or any improvements to the spear, I strongly advise you play the game with only spear and shield. You will find quickly that you do not favor 1h or 2h weapons, shoot even at times archery. Damage is great when you learn to aim.


    Short demo video of a guy that was literately born yesterday as a spear users. He was already injured as i did not spawn with a shield and spear and had to obtain one before shooting the video. Notice the attack speed is not bad at all, also i can hold the spear ready to attack and just release and it does same damage just starting extension as full extension. One real change in damage is my physical movement speed.



    Now when you get a spear that is not base 24 damage but 42, with 100+ in pole arms, with 80-100 athletics, you will do crazy damage per attack with ease. When i score another 200+ damage headshot I will screen shot it for you guys as it is pretty cool to be on foot pulling off that kind of damage with a weapon that only has 42 base damage.

    Now formations and AI....

    This right here is the failure of spears. The AI are trash. And yes they need their own formation and scripted AI that is a spear man first swordsmen second.

    For all the videos about Sword Vs Spear, Keep in mind most are sword vs spear not including shields. Most the videos come into the argument already with minds made up, and single combat is situational and hence why even phalanx carried swords. Spears in formation requires much less training then spears in single combat. In single combat against a sword user (assuming shields are at play as otherwise the spear would be go to) the spear user must be alot better trained as they need really good foot work, and be able to out dance their opponents.

    Did not have a chance to read everyone's post here just eh original so forgive me if someone stated something similar.

    Horse Archer VS AI.......yep not fare at all, no matter what universe of M&B we are in. AI simply dumb and only stands still or chases. Does not have understanding of herding targets or using terrain to their advantage.

    Human vs AI horse archers. Very easy to be honest. I keep my Spear men and standard infantry in separate groups. Use them in conjuction with map border to heard the enemy horses into a corner. Mean while your archers pick them off. The horsemen are usualy too dumb to break through the ranks and if they do its some random that ends up jumping back in with his buddies. Easy day. Its allso a good idea to have a 3rd infantry rank on tab, usualy under skirmishers #5 as your archers may need protection from assaulting infantry which you can slow down with your own horse archers or heavy cavavlry. You will always be fighting uphill battles with troop deployments and keeping your army scattered but this also enables having more than 1 archer group which greatly enhances their effectiveness on the battle fields. If possible keep horses running so that their right side is facing you when closests, this means they can not have as large or a firing range, when they rotate around they are now further out when firing decreasing their effectiveness.

    Edit: Never be afraid to organize your troops after loading the game. Those 3-4 mins can save your battles easy, also use all group slots when possbile. the more control you have the better outcomes you will experience.

    Troy is a fictional film and not historically accurate. The very fighting techniques used in the 1v1 situations were created for movie application and as such you will see that they fight each other spear vs spear followed by sword to sword...Why the hell did Hector not draw his sword moment the spear was broken? Simple answer is that Achilles would have to toss aside his own spear, or fight more on the retreat and less aggressive. In the case of this film they want Hector to appear to be a well matched Foe and Achilles to be the aggressor of the fight which you really can not do when dancing away with your spear. For all intensive purposes this film is Hollywood entertainment and nothing more. Same goes for movies like 300, The 300 Spartans (which was more accurate then its remake 300), gladiator, and list goes on.

    One is never better than the other in all situations. There is reason that spear wielders carry small swords, and that is for situations when the spear becomes a handicap, or is broken.

    • Significantly more stagger effect from spears.
    I am assuming you mean on a succesful attack that lands not if blocked? If yes then yes this needs too be addressed as head shots do alot of damage but I have noticed NPC ignoring this hit if they survive with no stagger effect.

    YES YES YES, this is something that would be fantastic, but would need some form of counter as it would be OP and no way to over come it with current AI. Perhaps greatly reduce turn rate to make formations act more like real world phalanx?
    • Spear point is active when held in place either braced OR in my hand. If you run into it you take damage.

    As it is right now, I only have spear and shield and I do carry a 1h for the purpose that I am now lvling 1h skill so i can unlock the shield perks. Otherwise I use 2 spears, one long for killing horse or reaching over my troops heads (max height helps with this not sure if it changes thrust vector or just animation) and a short spear with high thrust speed for close combat.

    With the AI I will be working with them to see what solutions we can use NOW while awaiting better AI for spear users.

    I would also love to see wagons added and makeshift camps, and better shield wall with front line crouching, second holding shield overhead forming a dome shape. O and real Pila that greatly reduce shield speed of enemy shields struct.

    Multiplayer is multiplayer, not sure why it keeps getting brought up in single player forum. IS it weaker in multiplayer yes, can you still do well with it, yes, mostly as player do not know how to fight it. But on topic seems fine in single player, combined with high athletics and 1h shields perks and you become a frontline beast, now i cam buidling a guy legit without using cconsol to see how it lvls up as thats what determins how viable they are. So far its been easy lvling, except it can have issues with soloing more than 15 looters at a time with a no cheat game.

    NPCs deflecting attacks while swinging

    found with Spears chamber blocking is very easy, you just overhead stab and when they try to attack you stab, works 50% of the time once your skill is 100+ in pole arms. Just have to aim in direction their attack is coming.
