I've been playing intensely for a week now & my 3rd attempt at a new character(Otis of Redding) has been quite successful
Some companions are free additions
A large influence is is the initial choices eg Your father was, as a child etc
a steppe child will make you good on horseback &archery etc think about the clues eg shop assistant(trade)
Pathfinding skill makes your party go faster, spotting can help avoid trouble & spot easy prey
If u go to several regions for a few recruits you can get a small elite balanced force quite quickly ;horse archers, Rhodok spearmen & crossbow, Nords & a few men at arms
tackling a few small sea raider bands will get you valuable loot ; chain mail byrnies & good helmets which you can wear yourself or give your companions
I should have said that for this character, for a change I gave myself steppe attributes but sailed to Sarranid city so I started of quite fast moving but for my first task nI nipped over to Khergia & got 7 recruits giving me a fast all mounted force quit quickly
The regions are suited to their native troops(!) open in the south etc woods & mountains in the north (nords etc)

If you wanna fight the mounted bandits , just train some rhodok spearmen
