If you click "continue siege" you can then talk to your companions without crashing the game.

I got this same bug in version 1.2 - I disbanded a caravan and wanted to use that companion to create a party, but it still says they are busy with something. I kicked them out of the clan and rehired them, but they were still busy doing something so I had to get rid of them permanently and hire a brand new companion to create the party.

Had this happen to me. If you end your contract as a mercenary the game doesn't consider you independent (this was the bug I ran into). I had to become a vassal and then break my vow pissing off everyone in the faction in order to work around the bug and progress the main quest. [1.2.0]

Ran into this same bug in version 1.2.0. Game thinks you are not independent after leaving a mercenary contract. I also had to become a vassal and then break my oath, but the relationship penalties are huge.

Running into this as well on patch 1.2.0. Also hired an engineer with 80 engineering, gave him the engineering role but my main character is the one who is being used in (very slow) sieges and is gaining engineering skill.

I had this same bug, I went to Ain Baliq and they were not there. [Beta 1.2.0]. I had to kick the companion out of the clan.
