  1. RoY ~ To Do List

Thank you for a wonderful mod, and the map is great, as has been said often already. Here are some things that puzzled me during my first couple of hours play, for what it's worth (I am not sure if any of them are worth the effort to change, just mentioning them because they work against that great viking feel of the mod):

-Roaming parties of Deserters on horseback? One ran me down almost immediately after character creation, which seemed particularly cruel considering the risk of perma-death while I, of course, couldn't outrun them on foot. Also I was surprised in general by how many parties I saw with the horseback icon, mostly Lords, considering the horseless nature of the mod.
-After visiting most of the campaign map, it seemed that for about half the fort settlements where I attempted to visit the Lord's hall I was instead kicked into a village scene, which makes things really difficult if you know the Lord you need to see for a mission is listed as inside the settlement.
-I was surprised that you didn't limit all village scenes to snowy Vaegir settlements. It was particularly odd to see some arid, Khergit village scenes.
-Companions still stop to tell you about Calradia, e.g. 'We are near Veluca. When I was younger, etc.' The exiled claimants to the various Calradian thrones are all hanging around viking halls too.
  2. TPW - Bug Reports

I just DL'd this mod today. The few new armors I was able to see look amazing and with a good new campaign map this mod should be downright glorious.

Two problems I encountered almost immediately: It seems that when you are creating your character's appearance this mod has replaced the black character skin with a different one. When I chose this new skin and went to the trainer for some quick fighting practice my character's head was white but his torso and hands were black. At all other times just his hands were black.

The bigger bug for me was that when I reached level 2 any attempt to open my character sheet, either from hitting the 'C' key directly or selecting the character tab while camped, crashes me to desktop every time. (If it is somehow relevant, I am running 1.011 and have never had this problems on the half dozen other mods I've played.)
  3. in the Rise of the Mongols, what kind of NPC should Temujin be in the mod?

    ChengYi 说:
This is something I've been thinking about. For character creation you're making your own character, what role should Temujin have?
    Wei.Xiadi 说:
I don't even know if Temujin as the 'historical' figure is even in it.  The mods more of a 'what would you do if you was in his position' type of mod.  Maybe we can incorporate parts of his life into the main story... [offering]  'what if' scenarios.

Getting back to the question in the original post, why not use the initial story-based character creation screens to put the player into a what-if situation, a parallel universe where he must take Temujin's place in history? You could do it by incorporating a pivotal moment in Temujin's life, for example:

As a child of the steppes, you grow up along the banks of the Onon River, near where the rolling Mongolian plains give way to darkly wooded mountains. Without enough grasslands to keep more than a few precious horses, cows or goats, you learn from a very early age to fish and, more importantly, hunt from horseback. Even so, finding enough food to survive is a constant struggle, so you spend your days tracking rats and birds, or perhaps a deer or antelope if you are lucky... and a good shot with a bow.

Among your childhood friends are the many sons of Yesugei, a local tribal chief now dead, poisoned several years ago by the Tatars. Among these six boys the elder is Begter - a brash, bullying sort - followed by his slightly younger and more thoughtful - though no less headstrong - stepbrother Temujin. With their father dead, you sense an icy rivalry growing daily between the two oldest boys, even during innocent games of knucklebones, played with dice made from a sheep's anklebones. You can also toss the knucklebones to forecast the future, and secretly you worry about the many dark omens already surrounding your friend Temujin - born tightly grasping in his hand a black blood clot the size of a knucklebone, or so the local villagers whisper.

    [Player choice] Go on.

One morning you are fishing along the river with your friends when Temujin catches a small fish. Begter walks up and snatches the catch from Temujin's hands, claiming it as his by right as the oldest son. "You should share the fish", you think to yourself, but say nothing as Temujin, enraged, runs back to his mother's tent to protest. You resume your fishing, hoping the unpleasant incident will soon be forgotten, but you are sadly mistaken.

Still fishing a few hours later, you notice Begter nearby sitting atop a small knoll overlooking both river and steppe. A slight movement in the tall grass catches your eye, and to your horror you see Temujin, bow in hand, stalking his stepbrother as if he was no more than a grazing gazelle. You cannot believe what you are seeing as Temujin silently circles around behind his brother. Fearing the worst, you must decide what to do quickly.

[Player choice] Stop Temujin from killing his stepbrother.

Even though you dislike Begter, thinking him little more than a small-minded bully, you cannot allow your friend Temujin to shame himself by resorting to such a lowly, taboo act as killing his own brother. You run up from behind and tackle Temujin just as he draws back his bowstring to strike. 'No!" cries out Temujin. Temujin's younger brother Khasar, also with bow in hand, rises up from the tall grass nearby and looks on, puzzled. Begter, seeing his two stepbrothers on either side of him, weapons still in hand, suddenly realizes the plot. Begter draws his knife and charges Temujin, striking him cruelly just as he rises from your grasp, and then charges after his other stepbrother with a roar.

"You fool," Temujin rasps with failing breath, and then closes his eyes.

Although you could not possibly have known it, the boy you watched die had been destined to unify the Mongol tribes, to forge an empire greater than any ever seen, indeed, to change the course of world history. Without him, these same tribes are now fated to struggle on as nomads, divided and forgotten, unless someone... you... will bring them together as one people and lead them to glory.

And then you continue on with the other character creation choices. If you went with an introduction like this you could still incorporate other important figures from Genghis Khan's life, e.g. an early quest might have Jamuka sending you on a mission to avenge his blood brother Temujin by hunting down Begter. I don't see how the player could compete with Genghis Khan himself if he were still alive. Making Temujin an NPC would be incredibly anticlimactic, but giving the player this historically-based backstory at character creation both frees them up to recreate Genghis Khan's achievements and motivates them to try.
  4. Post your screenshots here!

Here are a few of my favorite shots from my favorite mod, 1257, arranged in story form.

Before he died, the spy confirmed our worst fears - the Horde had slaughtered our villagers and fled south to a keep in Khergit lands.

I reached the King at dawn and gave him the grave news.
    MB1257b.jpg

We rode hard all day, cutting our way south through Khergit rearguard patrols meant to forestall our revenge.
    MB1257c.jpg

By early evening we arrived and stormed the enemy keep in force.
    MB1257d.jpg

A cold fury overtook me as we fought our way up to the tower. There would be no mercy on this day.
    MB1257dd.jpg

I tossed off my helm and charged headlong at the villains...
    MB1257e.jpg

...and cut them down where they stood.
    MB1257f.jpg

A last lone archer might have been my doom if a fellow hadn't called out to me...
    MB1257g.jpg

...I only just raised my shield in time to stop his well-aimed shot.
    MB1257h.jpg

As my men surrounded the bowman I shut his eyes for all time.

The Khergit keep was ours, and there was much rejoicing.

  5. [RELZ]Calradia Map Refinement

Thanks, Aldwen, for this brilliant map. The original Native map often hampered my sense of immersion in the game,  with its illogically placed castles and villages seemingly arranged to be equidistant instead of in any intuitive, organic way. To cite a quick example of how much fun your map makes the game, it turned a simple trip from Rivacheg up into the Vaegir mountains a thrill ride, as I had to wait for local Lords to drive deserter bands from the mountain pass up to Khudan before I dared move my battle-depleted party - with the old map I would have just yawned and made a wide semicircle around the danger. Well done!

Since save game compatibility is a hot topic for discussion, I am happy to report that I was able to switch to your map in a 250+ day old saved game I was playing using the 1257 mod. My game was saved at night with my party inside a city (Wercheg) and no other parties visible nearby. Afterwards I rode out to check on some castle sieges that I knew had begun before I switched maps - the armies were still there and able to capture their objectives, even though I am guessing that your mod changed their altitudes.

(By the way, as a big fan of the 1257 Edition realism mod I have to say that your realistic map is a perfect addition to it. The Rhodok/Khergit border always seemed so arbitrary to me before.)
  6. Hunting

I just posted this in a different thread a few minutes ago, but seeing as the topic is hunting I'd love to see someone mod it even further...

I am relatively new here so pardon me if this has been done already, but seeing that someone has modded in the ability go hunting, could someone adapt this in order to expand the types of missions available from village and keep management?

For example, besides a village elder always sending you off after more cattle or seed grain, how about adding new missions like:
-the village is low on food and asks the Lord to go on a hunt for venison.
-the village farmers and their herds are being attacked by a wild boar, bear or pack of wolves that need to be tracked and hunted down to restore the village's productivity.
-a poacher has been taking game from the Lord's forests and needs to be found and dealt with (ends with a duel in woods or recruiting the poacher into your party, ignoring leads to declining productivity and an eventual bandit uprising - a la Robin Hood).
-to improve his relations with competing lords, the player invites them to a hunting contest on his lands (winning the hunt gets you more renown, but letting your guest win earns you more relationship gain).

That's just a few ideas, the goal is to add more mission types to overseeing your domain, which seem lacking to me.
