    The program you use doesnt influence your final product. They all do the same thing when it comes to low poly, just in different ways.

    paint all the parts you don't need in alpha channel.

    And about performance ingame, unless youre running MnB on an atari it shouldnt be too much of an issue. If you're worried, just make the textures for the feathers low res, like 64x64 or something. Although depending on how the engine's written it could be faster to incorporate them into the main texture of the helmet and make that transparent.
