Well, most expansion packs don't add multiplayer. Plenty of expansions are basically just extra levels for the original game - new assets with no new mechanics so to speak.
I'd certainly be happy to pay for this expansion. They put the work in and did a good job, they should be payed for it. I, like many others, payed less ($15) for this game, because at the time it was unfinished, and I was helping out (I hope!) in a small way as a sort of tester. So in a sense there's never been any simple charity here (and nor should there be) - just a clever release scheme which seems to have worked out well for everyone!
That's all quite true. I started in .808, bought it for myself and a friend. However, personally, I don't care so much about the multiplayer. Yes, blasphemy and all that. But think about it. M&B is a game that basically requires things to work instantly, and I don't know of any multiplayer, barring direct LAN, that doesn't have network lag causing problems, especially when melee starts getting involved. God knows, even with DSL, I've been shot around corners by enemy snipers in stuff like TF2 more times than I can count.
I'd personally rather have the non-MP improvements than the MP. If it were some kinda co-op that I could play with my buddy, I'd be more willing to pay. But just deathmatch? Doesn't interest me. And there's where the problem comes in. Do I have to buy the expansion just to get the patched stuff (In-engine HDR, although it doesn't look very good in those pics, the normal mapping, better AI, what have you)? I hope not, otherwise I would be obliged to say it's milking.
