I don’t like the idea of multiple teams for bigger countries, as it will unfairly increase their winning chances to a great extent, purely based on population size.
If this is what people actually prefer, than perhaps an even better suggestion would be to form national armies, instead of 8-player teams. For instance, Germany would be able to muster an army of 120 capable players, while a smaller country would only manage to gather a group of 35 players. They will fight each other in a 120 vs. 35 battle. This will accurately reflect the absolute strength of each respective country.
Of course, the suggestion presented above is not meant to be taken seriously. Multiple teams per country would defeat the purpose of the NC.
The NC is a tournament which aims to find out what country / region is the best. Each country selects the 8 most optimally suited players available from their respective player pool. Quantity does not necessarily equate to quality. Having access to more players within a country simply because it is bigger (i.e., bigger population / player pool), is not more than logical, and obviously there will be more ‘decent’ players among them (also, there will be a lot more ‘noobs’, but this is not taken into account). Allowing bigger countries to form multiple teams just because they have more decent players would therefore be a decision made on the basis of quantity, not quality. Preferably, one would want to minimize the effect of population size, even though this can never be fully accomplished.
In order to incorporate the inevitable factor of population size, and in order to be able to objectively compare skill level between countries of varying sizes, population size has to be normalized. This is why each country can only select up to 8 players to participate per match. This way, population size is not about absolute numbers, but about percentages. Bigger countries, such as Germany, will expectedly have more ‘godlike’ players among their 8 chosen ones, compared to smaller countries. However, hypothetically, if a smaller country has a high percentage of ‘godlike’ players within their population, then their team might still be able to win, regardless of absolute population size, because on average, their players are more skilled.
I think the NC as it currently exists is nicely balanced, and adding multiple teams per country will not be an improvement.
Of course, the decision of how the national team and/or players are chosen WITHIN a particular country (e.g., personally selected by the team captain, qualification matches between individual players and/or competing teams, poll voting, first-to-sign-up, constant rotation, etc.) is up to the countries themselves.
