The sad part is that he's actually a pretty good fighter. If he put his efforts in to more constructive pursuits, he could probably lead a powerful faction.

Not everyone agrees with having no rules for everything, that is why Odard compromised.

There's always going to be a few people on either side that are unhappy. I'd imagine if it was put up to a pure vote between the new set of rules and a simple four or five rules similar to those on the Forge HCRP server, the more simple rules would win. The community overhwelmingly appears to want LESS rules. Just look at this survey.

The past few days a player named ConnorTR has been declaring war on everyone, killing people at the spawn locations, taunting people in OOC, etc. Players have been vote kicking him repeatedly and he refuses to stop logging in and continueing the same behaviors. Not sure if this is a language barrier issue or if he's purposely trolling. He seems to yell a lot of stuff in what I believe is Turkish.

I commend you guys for taking player feedback in to consideration. However, IMHO this rule set is still unnecessarily complicated, restrictive of RP and open to abuse both by players and administrators. I still strongly prefer the Forge HCRP server set of rules, which I could count on one hand:

    1. Roleplay
    2. NLR & NRR
    3. No randoming
    4. No spawnkilling

In my opinion, these rules are much less restrictive and open to abuse and more closely resembled what the PW community had asked for.

May I suggest updated the rules on the first post to reflect the new rule set? IMHO that is one of the major draws of this server.

ANYWAY! We have begun training, although we have a very low attendance at the moment, and hopefully will begin clan events soon.

I saw something about a training at 7. It didn't give a time zone though. For future reference, when is the training usually?

[Discussion] [US_PW_East] New poll: What kind of event would you like to play?

I haven't read anything that makes me think there are any more rules necessary than "roleplay well". That would cover randoming, war rules, robbing, NLR, etc. And with these rules, an admin should be almost unnecessary on a good server. In each of the last two days on the Forge Hardcore Roleplay server there were no admins on for a couple of hours and there were small groups of randomers and the community banded together to hunt down the "murderers", I even saw a reward being put out on one of them. No one raged, they simply took care of it. And after attempting to roleplay it a few times, they simply started vote kicking the players. That's the way a server should be.

And without all the unnecessary rules, admins are free to focus on serious issues. Just think of how much time admins waste trying to figure out if someone declared their reason for war four times in chat or three, if someone waited 12 or 15 minutes to rob the same person, if someone deserves a refund, etc. while people run around the map randoming.

Not to mention, how incredibly sanitary and boring all the rules make the game. It feels more like a game of candy land where players argue over whether they moved their character three places or two. There's no element of danger or excitement or need to cooperate. And if you die, no worry. An admin will give you all your money back if you complain enough.

I have led a faction many times in PW and I agree that before I do what what I want to do in PW, the rules are something that forces linearity on my RP.  In real life, people wouldn't be spending or working for their own money if they could just make up a bull**** reason for a refund from some mystical deity or spend free money.I also think the definition of Fail RP is too limiting. RP does mean am bandit rob u, it may not be specific but it is roleplay. I have been saying "pay 1000 or pay another way" for months, this is the same thing just different wording. A bandit in real life does not give a **** about what you consider nicety or not.I don't think their should be restrictions about reasons for war as long is their is a reason; This server has gotten stagnant as **** because people who make a faction consider a valid reason for war to be some untouchable thing and complain anytime a war gets started for ANY reason.I think the current rules cater too much to peoples rage and not enough to realism or even  fun for everyone. The current rules should definitely  be slimmed down.

    I couldn't agree more.

The Forge HCRP server has been using even less rules for the last two days and it's worked out pretty wells so far. I'm not sure how the quality of roleplaying compares on the US servers though.

[Discussion] [US_PW_East] New poll: What kind of event would you like to play?

Speaking of this, the Forge HCRP server recently implemented a sparse rule set after getting similar feed back. I tried it out today and for the most part it went well. The big powerful factions seemed less likely to claim all the castles  when there weren't war rules since other factions could just refuse to declare peace and continue to fight them. And it's hard to defend three castles at once when people can lock themselves inside, declare war and then claim the castle.

It was also a lot more fun to kill randomers in the main town than it would be to report it to an admin and have them look in to it 10-15 minutes later.

    The Forge PW HCRP Server

Just played a few hours. There was some randoming but we took care of it by kicking one player and physically guarding the spawn town to prevent people from randoming the new players. One person began shooting randomly at us and then running away and an admin logged on and kicked them.

You'd "scream" as well if, despite providing evidence, explanations, and logic, your ideas were completely ignored on the basis of not "fitting in" with other PW servers.

Besides, there's nothing to keep players playing after they've made money (with admin refunds and banks) since the rules prevent any kind of anything actually happening.
I don't see a problem with Anonymous's rules. If you want to "pwn some nubs" Native servers cater to that. The Rules are there so it's NOT a random deathmatch server. PW Shouldn't be treated as if it was a deathmatch server with different rules, it should be treated as a place to live in the world of Calradia.
You said there's nothing keeping the players after they made their money. What demographic of the warband player base are you speaking of?

    Splintert 说:
Why are you painting a reduction in rules like it will suddenly cause everyone to wildly attack each other with spawn weapons? Pointing the to extremes will not benefit your nor my argument.

I don't play PW to "pwn noobs" (although it happens anyways), I play(ed) PW because it provided a backdrop, a reason, a motivating factor to the battles or events. As much as I hate it when people tout how long they've been around on PW, I remember a time in which people were motivated to fight for causes, hold celebrations for victory, stand in line for grand speeches, stand against your enemies in a glorious but hopeless last stand. These things don't happen any more. The only difference between then and now are the rules. Every single PW feature added since the first version would greatly benefit the things that used to happen. However, with all of the rules, players are more worried about collecting large sums of cash than actually playing the mod. If you log onto the server, and look around for a few minutes, you can clearly see that nothing is happening. In fact, I guarantee that nothing is happening. Players are too afraid to lose their "hard earned" cash to actually do anything.

The reason rules are the cause of this is almost solely connected to the rules protecting the weak. Since the serfs and crafters no longer have to worry about so-called "randomers" (due to administrative protection), they have absolutely no reason to form groups with other players. They collect hundreds of thousands of denars, store it in their bank, and log out after a short period of time because grinding is boring. The next day, they come back and do the same thing. And the next day. And the next. So, day after day, we see the exact same thing happening on our server (and every other server with RP rules): nothing. The guys you claim to be warmongering, trollish idiots are the same guys who would lead factions into battle or stand by your side in combat should you be the leader. Instead, however, due to lack of leadership, they form small groups with their close friends. Due to the group's unwillingness to grind, they train as outlaws and begin to attempt to rob the serfs (who are carrying sometimes dozens of thousands of denars, completely unprotected in a RP-sense). When the serfs get robbed, they whine to administrators, who in turn give them money back for being "randomed" (despite showing no attempt to protect themselves via in character means, such as hiring guards, carrying a weapon, or using side routes to avoid main traffic).

This brings us to my final point for now, administrative refunds and banking. Countless times, refunds are given out to players. The reason it started is to appease them when the "rule breaking randomer troll" didn't actually break a rule, and the administrator wants the "victim" to shut up. So, the player thinks to himself "Hey, I can get free money for doing nothing but complaining in administrator chat!". This creates an even further, deeper reliance on administrative money and not playing the game via in-character means. Complicating the issue even moreso is the banking. Banking allows players to horde unbelievable sums of money, with absolutely no threat of losing it. Because of these large sums of money in the bank, they have even less of a reason to protect their in-game, in-character investments via in-character, roleplay means. The final factor contributing to lack of player involvement in in-character methods is refunds for server resets. Not only are we as administrators relying entirely on the player's word for the amount, we're not treating all of the players in a fair and balanced manor. Even if you gave refunds for the next week after a reset, you still would not successfully refund every player who lost money. Adding to the problem is the fact that you just artificially created hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of denars worth of cash, without any raw material collection or crafting taking place. This creates a considerable problem because the players have all this cash, with nothing to spend it on, and no will to actually contribute to the economy we, as administrators, just completely destroyed.

Overall, the ironic thing about the whole situation is that your roleplay-enforcing/enhancing rules actually prevent roleplayers from properly playing their roles, prevents any kind of real gameplay from taking place, and encourages players to not play the game due to the lack of anything interesting happening for weeks at a time (outside of administrator events, which are funded entirely by administrators and give the players no risk of losing what they have).

    Friedrich 说:
As much as I enjoy roleplaying, I have to agree with Splintert on this one.

Planned roleplay with others is fun, but spontaneous roleplay is far more engaging and interesting to go along with because you never know what kind of curve ball the server and it's players will throw at you. Rules that we have severely restrict spontaneous roleplay, and it's frustrating that many of you do not understand this.

A perfect example of spontaneous roleplay takes us back to my first week of PW in June 2011. As there were no admins online, there was quite a bit of crap going on in terms of randoming. I had personally witnessed a gang of outlaws mass random before retreating back into the woods to regroup and heal. In response to the lack of admins and for the sake of virtual justice, I had rallied up the population in the form of an angry mob of peasants and went after the band. Although a costly victory, we managed to defeat the outlaws/randomers and eventually they rage quit. In the end, it was a damned good time and not a single person complained about losing items or gold and were instead satisfied that justice had been served.

Now lets apply this example to current day US East. The randomers/outlaws would have been banned, the vigilantes would have also been punished, and everybody would be *****ing and moaning for refunds. Try to find the roleplay in this situation wait; there was none.

It's time for the players to take the law into their own hands. It's time for a leader to emerge and form a town watch or militia group to combat injustice in the land. It's time people worked together to be successful in the game, and it's time to bring back the spontaneous roleplay that was triggered from the actions of other players, not through planned events and futile efforts to push it upon the players.

We need to debate this. We really do, and we need to do so very soon. I'm available this week over TeamSpeak after 3pm EST.

Now for the main purpose of this thread. There has been constant bickering between the administrators of US East about modifying and changing the rules, however I have failed to see a substantial amount of community input regarding modifying the rules that we currently use. There are those who believe that the rules, in an essence "protect" roleplay by preventing idiots from doing anything they please. There are those who believe that rules are the only thing restricting the imagination of the player and preventing him or her from accomplishing what they want when they play Persistent World. There are also those who are in the middle and aren't quite sure which is the best approach.

After much text to go through I finally bring you readers to the question at hand. Please remember to be respectful and for the sake of us all, provide logical explanation for your opinion rather than simply attacking another person's views.

    Without further ado:

Do the current rules or an elaborate set of them make roleplay and Persistent World as we know it,  or break it?

It completely breaks the roleplay. The funniest rule I've seen is the limits on who can rob and how much they can take. What if I'm on a server where you're only allowed to take one item. Someone rides up to me as I'm carrying a cart full of gold and I detach my cart from my horse. Are they then not allowed to take the cart and the horse?

People plan around the server rules to make money without actually having to hire armed guards. If they're only allowed to be robbed 1k every 20 minutes and they make 5k every 20 minutes mining, why would they hire a guard for 5k?

And anyone who's ever played on a server with war rules knows how stiffling it can be when your Lord declares war in what they thought was a legal way. You break the door down, you kill half the enemy and are on your way to the throne room when an admin steps in and says it was an illegal war because your roleplay reason for fighting it didn't fit their standards or because you only typed the reason in global chat three times instead of four, etc.

A temp ban seems fair. I wouldn't say he's a lost cause yet. There's a difference between a player who doesn't understand what good roleplay is and therefor displays bad roleplay and a player who knows what good roleplay is is purposely does the opposite to troll. I haven't had enough experiences with this gentleman to know which category he might belong in.
