    I agree completely. You could technically form a new party with them from the clan screen, but why can't they just automatically start up a new group after they are released.

    You can create a army any time with the mod Clan Army. You can stop them from "donating" troops with a different mod (I forget the name).

    Companions are pretty useless in this game except for engineering and maybe medicine. Most of their skills are of no value to your party. Having a high level scout appears to be the same as having no scout at all. You should really be your own quartermaster. They fight good in the arena, not so much on the battlefield.

    In Warband fielding a large force on companions was awesome. In Bannerlord they don't really seem to matter that much.

    Exactly. They're great for fortifying your own army without having to spend influence points. Not much for anything else (except for the random passive income and random NPC relations increases).

  2. Best use of companions

    I'd say, in late game, to use them to form their own parties/armies. They generate passive income and occasionally boost relations with random city NPC's, also good for calling them into your own army without using influence points.

    Be aware that they're useless otherwise, they won't join other armies and generally patrol around a random areas.
